Lurkers

I must have too much time on my hands tonight....

Does anybody else check at the bottom of the forum to see who's on at any given time? Seems like a lot of lurkers. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
I usually check in here three or four times a day, but don't often post. I guess it's hard to keep up with the wit around here! I do get a lot of useful information, though.

I've noticed those lists but never looked at them. Until now.

lurking:
1. To lie in wait, as in ambush.
2. To move furtively; sneak.
3. To exist unobserved or unsuspected.

Raise your hand if you fit the definition.

If you don't want folks to know you are lurking, you can set your default to "private."

I didn't mean "lurker" in a negative sense....it's more of what I thought of as someone looking around but not necessarily contributing. Even that sounds negative, and it's still not what I was trying to get at. How about "visiting"? Could be members who are just reading posts and not responding or joining in.
Like I said, I must have too much time on my hands tonight....

It could be that someone is checking out what has been written and may not feel a need to post, or, maybe, thought there might be a conversation to engage, and then, after reading the posts, did not see a fit at the moment...plus, I always thought of a lurker as someone who was not a registered member and was looking through posts for, what could be, a variety of reasons.

hey I just read that BF now has 100,000 registered users.

I can see why some people may not like posting. You just never know what you'll get...it can be a surprise, both good and bad.

Dictionary definition makes it seems a lot more negative than how it's used around BF by most.

I'll bet some of those names probably have just kept a window open on their machines and aren't really there.

I look down at that line most nights when it is after 1 AM CST. Many times I'm the only registered user around, and am frequently one of only 3 or 4 (mostly from California), but there will almost always be some lurkers around.

I "lurk" because by the time I actually get to read any of the posts, everything that should/could be said (and maybe some things that shouldn't) has already been said. As a conservative Christian I generally need to keep a low profile anyway in the BF

Why don't you want to look like a complete fool. We embrace and love our complete fools.

I, for one, can certainly feel the love.

well i'm pretty much used to it now.... but Road Bikes forum doesn't take kindly to strangers.

*also, wouldn't Google spider bots attribute to a good portion of the lurker number?

Since you opened the door, now I've got to know.

As a conservative Christian, what's the story behind the "Sandwarrier screen name and avitar?

What happens when you invoke invisable mode on your profile options?

Now who's bringing the pie.
