Seemed like a good day for it
The company store gives us Veterans' Day.
Mrs S' company store doesn't.
Looks like I have the day free... let's see... let's see... how about an all day bike ride?
After Saturday's abandonment, it seemed the thing to do.
So, I plotted out a 40 mile loop, thought I did 50 but -in the end- it was 40.06.
And with 2900' of climbing, top boot!
That first spike at the left (1) is Devil's Slide.
I've ridden to the top many times but never over the other side.
Frankly, it's scary but after a peptalk by Pete (taxi777) in the NorCal Forum, I figured it couldn't be any worse than what I'm doing already. The ride up is no joy, either.
From the top of the 8.7% blip is this view of Linda Mar Beach
Right after you pass the beach, here's the start of the 1.25 mile climb
So, I get to the top wondering if I have the nerve to continue on to Half Moon Bay.
If I go forward, no matter how I come back, I've got some climbing to do. Over and over again.
Here's the view looking NNW from Montara Beach.
I've driven a few times to Montara Beach as a jumping off point for rides farther south.
I drive because I'm afraid to ride to Montara on my bike.
Well, was afraid. Obviously, I have gone forward.
And on to Half Moon Bay.
This is an active farming community.
This is no simulation, this is a real bridle and feed store
And right next door:
Usually I stop here on my bike and pick up a couple of CDs to bring home
Not today. Just had a mind for the ride and nothing else.
I said it was a good day for it. That's not just for the ride.
It's Veterans' Day... a day we honor our dead.
I know it's too commemorate our fallen troops but why not go up to Skylawn and visit my mom?
I haven't visited in a long while and, really, her buying me a Schwinn Varsity when I was 18 is what led me to where I am today.
How fitting to take the bike to go see her.
The only problem is HMB sits at about 75' and Skylawn is at 1000'.
Yep, I have to climb that bump in the middle from the 11.3% mark to past the 12.4% mark.
That hump is Highway 92.
You need more guts than brains to ride this road.
It's narrow, there's little or no shoulder and it's busy. All the time.
The cars -and Trucks. BIG ones- go by awfully close.
It was worth it.
This is looking down from Skylawn to where I started from and all the way through the valley.
This is the easy part the steep part starts just to the left, out of view, and continues up.
More later. But what a satisfying day. I set out to do a nice long, unfettered ride.
Did 40 miles, 2900' of climbing and did it with a clock time of 4 hours and a time-in-motion of 3.5 hours.
Maybe my best ever and a real test. The second half coming home, was no picnic. And I LOVED it

Nice pics, nice day. We don't see those kind of almost winter days 1000 miles to your north.

Every time I look at your ride profile and distance- I think back to when you were new to the forum and explaining that you had to climb hills- due to where your house was.
All right- you can climb hills- enough is enough. Go and find some flatlands to prove to yourself that they exist.

Great pics. I especially like the coast line in #3. I've been out there at half Moon Bay, all the way down to Santa Cruz.
