About $70 for plastic pedals that would only work from a side view on many recumbents. Spend the money on lights.

Not certain about the lights- but those toe clips are the only style I have ever found that worked. Easy to clip out of and being a rigid plastic- do allow you to pull up as well as normal pedalling.

Those clips look decent. One would think that something like them, sans the lights, would be available at a much lower price. That kind of clip would put your feet into the right position and encourage you to use a proper pedaling technique --- which is about 95% (or more) of the benefit of any clipless pedal.

Checked around and found that some recommend the Zefal toe clips as an option for a low-cost, strapless, mini-toe clip.

I'm tempted to try a set of these on my flat-bar Fuji. No flashy lights, but at around $6-$8/pr, that's a good trade-off.

I have these from Nashbar on both of my son's bikes. They keep his feet in the proper position, allow him to move his feet off the pedals quickly, provide some upward pull ability and they will have to do until he quits changing shoe size every few months.

The wife has had the Zefal 1/2 clips as we call them and the they have been on her bike for around 10 years. Would never say indestructable- but resilient is a good choice for them.
