What if any

safety measures do you utilize during hot weather riding? Last week the heat and humidity/heat index here in central NC really made for unsafe riding conditions. Lp

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. I make sure I have 12 to 16 ounces of water about half and hour before riding, and then at least one bottle per hour. Since I'm one of those who sweats tons of salt, I also use an energy drink and alternate between it and plain water.

I also wear a lighter colored jersey, and try to keep my speed up enough that the breeze evaoprates the moisture away (a difficult trick with 90% humidity). Finally, with each advancing year, I tell myself to be prepared for "taking it easy in the heat." Yet, to date, it hasn't had much of an effect compared with when I was in my 30s and 40s.

I'll agree with hydrate and eat. Also, I carry Gatorade powder in small aspirin bottles. Each small bottle holds enough to mix one bike water bottle full of Gatorade. When my two bottles are dry, I'll stop somewhere for water and mix some more Gatorade. Works for me.

Watch out for each other. Last Saturday got into high 90's and high humidity. On a 75 mi ride, I was fine, but one of my friends wasn't doing well. I dropped off the main group with him until we got to a rest stop with water, food and air conditioning. He was good to head home, and I caught up with the rest of the group and finished my ride. Other people have done the same for me in the past.

Camelbak filled with ice and water.
One or two Polar bottles willed with ice and Gatorade.
3/4 or longer zipper on jersey to unzip and let some air in.

+1 On the Camelback with ice! I push as many ice-cubes as possible into my Camelback, then fill up the spaces between the cubes with cold water. This works so well it makes you wonder how riders survived hot weather before Camelbacks were invented!

Acclimate a little. Don't go out and try to push hard on the first hot days of the season.

Yes... mournings can still be hot, but not near as bad. I actually seem to get used to the heat as the summer wears on, but I still stick to rides shorter than 25 miles. I sweat like a pig, so 2 bottles want get me past 25.
