Just back from a 450 mile solo ride 6 days, longest day 91 miles, shortest 45 miles. Heart condition, on meds. got OK from MD. Can't go too hard, but can go long. I used to go hard and long, but got a warning last year. So far so good. Keeps on ticken!

Good job. Glad you can enjoy...building up the stamina will be a long and slow process but at least you are enjoying it. Slow and sure will get you there too. Bet you saw a lot of things along the way too. Enjoy.

Herb,
I, too, just got back from a solo 547 mile ride, if you don't count the 3000 others that were along, too. I'm 61. On meds. Longest day 108. Shortest 44. IT'S LIKE I HAVE A TWIN! Congrats on the ride. It's quite an accomplishment. Way to go.

Herb,
If you wouldn't mind me asking, what was your wake up call? I'm 61 and have been riding for about a year although I have been a runner since high school. I have had a couple of episodes where I get an irregular high heartbeat (resting heartrate about 46). Went to the doc and got the ekg etc but they coulnt find anything. I'm just interested in what your symtems were.

Wake up call
Summer of 2005 I did the bike tour of Colorado, many miles, many hills , much altitide, then I did Montreal to Boston, was able to stay with and best 30 yearolds. Spring of 2006 was recovering from an upper respiratory cold. On a training ride I noticed a slight burn in my upper mid chest. I thought that it was from the chest cold, the burn persisted on hills. I thought that I should get it checked out, hoping to hear that I was a hypochondriac. It turned out that I had a clog in a coronay artery, verified by nuclear scan. I'm on meds now. I may be presumptious to think that the other arteries are ok, especially after seeing what happened to Tim Russert. I seem to be able to go long , but not too hard. I guess that there are no gurantees. Good luck, be tuned in to how you feel.
