B.S. From The LBS

I was looking for a Giant Suede DX for my in laws family vacation house. I called a not so local LBS (20 miles) that carries Giant and asked if they had any in stock. They said yes, so I said I'll come by. A few hours later, I walk in and ask to see the bike(s). "Well, they are all in the back, still in boxes. We should have some put together by the midddle of next week."

Whaaat? I called and asked! They brushed this off, and I can't believe that I was polite and just said that I would check back, later. As in waaaay later, maybe about never. What do you make of this? bk

On the phone would have been the perfect time for them to say, "Yes, we do, but none of them are assembled. When would you like to see one so we can have one ready?"

In person, would have been the perfect time to say, "None are assembled right now, do you have 20 minutes? If so, what color/size are you interested in?"

Anything else was poor customer service.

Go in, pick out a bike, have them install a bunch of aftermarket accessories. When you get to the counter, change your mind.

True.

I remember a guy who absolutely needed his suit pressed by Friday at 5:00. The dry cleaner said, "no problem."

However, when the customer showed up, the suit wasn't ready. The store owner said, "I'm terribly sorry. We made a mistake, but if you can wait 10 minutes, we will correct it immediately." The story not only had a happy ending, but by acknowledging and fixing the mistake at once, the shop turned a very unhappy person into a customer for life.

What we had here was a failure to communicate.

Later in the day, I went another shop (further away) and took the bike out for a test ride. The guy looked a little irked when I returned 20 minutes later. Before he could say anything, I said; Write it up, this is going home with me. He exhaled, and we shook hands. Done deal. bk

It just amazes me how easily the first LBS "sent me down the road". Did they expect me to come back, or did they just not care. BTW, I told the salesman at the 2d LBS the story, and you could tell he was really happy about it. It's a strange life. bk
