Something else to consider for city commuting would be a used early 90's rigid steel MTB. They can had pretty cheap, are very durable and most have provisions for racks. Put some smooth tires on and you have a great commuter. Look for Cromoly tubing, avoid Hiten.

Howdy and welcome. Like Louis said...shop for a good LBS, they will then
get you onto the right bike. Also, like ad6mj said, those old rigid mountain bikes are
great commuters as my old Trek and I can attest to.

Happy Trails

Greetings and welcome! I'm always glad to see someone new discovering or rediscovering how great cycling is. I can't offer any opinions about new bikes, since I am of the retrogrouch persuasion and ride old steel, but I will add my 2 cents about front suspension on a commuter.... Don't!... Suspension bikes work wonderfully if you spend a lot of time offroad or bouncing across potholes or jumping curbs, but otherwise a high percentage of your energy is wasted by the bike bouncing up and down, when your efforts should be directed to propelling your forward. The cheaper the suspension, the more the bounce. It's just more efficient (IMHO) to go rigid.

Welcome. Post often. Post pictures. I don't know nothin' about those bikes, but I know something about the AIDS ride. I have done AIDS/LifeCycle for the last 4 years. It's the new CA AIDS Ride. I expect to see you there next year.

I bought a MTB years ago - hard tail with front shocks. I use this bike when I commute and ride for a little variety now and then. I have been thinking of going to a rigid fork because the front fork motion is just bothersom.

Hard to beat a rigid steel MTB for versatility. Check this thread for the story of mine.

I've already decided to avoid the FS, thanks to all the great advice given here. I should pick something out this week.

Mojo: The CA ride again next year? Ha, thanks for the overwhelming vote of confidence.
