What’s a good average speed for a 40 mile training ride?
I’m new to biking but have finished a couple of marathons in 2004.
I’ve be riding for 45 days, 52 years old wt. 198, 6’
Finished a 42 mile ride today with an average speed 17.5.
There is a local 85 mile ride in Oct. I would like to finish.
What should my long ride be a week or so before this ride?

So is the average, the average speed from the bikes computer? Other people take average as their common fast cruising speed. If your bike computer has a 17 average, your cruising speed is probably around 19 (the average is brought down by stops for stop signs and such). Some people take average speed to mean the fastest speed they achieve on the flat when not quite sprinting. And other people just plain lie.
A 17.5 average for 40 miles is pretty respectable especially at our advanced ages.
