Bike Forum 50+ "Friend?"

Bike Forum 50+ "Friend?"

I have a couple of automated messages stating that a BF member would like to be my "friend"

OK, what is a bike forums "friend" and what is gained by having a bike forum "friend?"

Or should I just ignore the request?

Have others been requested to be a "friend?"

If we are "friends," can we call each other by our first names?

I also received a request to be a friend. I feel kindlly toward that person so I agreed.

I don't know what a BF friend is, but I am halfway tempted to do it. Even though I don't know the benefits. Hmmm...maybe I'll wait and talk to the bank folks.

I also answered in the affirmative, even though I knew not what I was getting into.

I don't know what the purpose of it is. It seems to be kind of a cross between those stickers that kids collect and 2nd grade valentine's day. It's kind of like Facebook. I think we were doing just fine without it, though. I just look at it as an opportunity to thank people who have made my BF experience so pleasurable.

did you know there are private forums (clubs) now, too?

I think this is all part of the site / software upgrade they did a few weeks ago. They're also rolling out something called the "Titanium Club," at $25/year, which will give you various rights/abilities. I haven't read the details.

All part of what all sites are doing to get involved in social networking....even the Wall Street Journal rolled out a new "communities" forum this week.

BTW, if you're on Facebook, there is a very nice bicycling application called "Bicycle" that is useful for posting pics of your bike and tracking rides. It also has a classifieds section and a discussion board but there isn't much action there.

OK, should we have a poll to see who has been asked most times to be a "friend?"

I mean, there may be folks out there who didn't get any valentines (oops! I mean haven't been asked to be a friend).

And there may be others who have received dozens of requests! As someone else mentioned, it does remind me a bit of elementary school and Valentine's Day!

Perhaps we should have some sort of a chart.

Generally, on most forums it becomes a popularity contest, like on Facebook or MySpace, to see who has "the most" friends.

About the only benefit that I've ever seen of having a friend list on a vBulletin Board like BikeForum is if I send private messages to certain people on a regular basis, it makes it quicker to start the message.... or you can tell if your "friends" are online or not... other than that... nada...

Yeah, I got one from Bicycle Tutor. I said yes. Now I can call him Bicycle, rather than Mr. Tutor.

I guess I'm just a cranky old fart, but I don't see any value in the friends function or private messages for that matter. No offense to anyone, but it just seems silly to me. This is a discussion forum and discussions can take place on the forums. I looked for a way to disable "friends" because I really don't want to be bothered by it. I found a way to prevent emails to be sent requesting to be friends, but I don't know if that prevents requests completely. I disabled private messaging a while back. The appeal of the whole "social networking" thing just escapes me.

Solveg asked me to be a friend and I obliged. Not certain what "privilege" comes with it. Why isn't there some explanation somewhere?

I went into my profile, saw it drastically changed, wondered what all the new changes meant and noticed, in the right hand corner, a list of all the people who checked me out. This means anyone I want to check out will also know I went there - sortof like "Match.com". I don't like that feature! Sometimes I just want to lurk and check someone out without them knowing. What was interesting is that 2 people I used to know, had an affair with each other and disappeared last year, looked at my profile.

BTW I sadly predict Solveg will be my only friend!

Though some of us would believe the purpose of a site like this would be to talk bikes, in truth the purpose is to generate cash. The more screens more people see for more minutes the better for ad impressions and click-though potential. So far, though, bike talk still seems an allowed activity.

Nicely enough apparently social networking usurped porn on the net as a leading "attraction."

See, now, Pam, wasn't it nice to get a friend right off the bat? I started asking people as soon as I figured out how difficult it is to do the asking. It's real nice to be* asked, not so much take the risk.

You guys are all a bunch of fuddy duddies. Esp those who are acting offended* at being asked. That's not very nice.

Somewhere out there is a doctoral student doing a sociogram based upon "friends" requests, and correlating the "stars" and the "isolates" with the type of bike owned.

Perhaps the hypothesis is:

Those whom the sociogram shows as "stars" are more likely to own road bikes.

The "isolates" own recumbents.

Thank you for asking (seriously) for frankly I don't get it. Aren't we all "friends" posting here as it is? At least I hope so. And we always had the ability to PM if we needed to keep a message private.

And Solveg you post with me in P & R - frankly who else there would I ask!!!!????? What advantage do I get having "friends"??? (and yes I do not use facebook - I've never even been there).

I don't see anyone saying they were offended by being asked. I certainly wasn't.
However, I was deeply offended by DnvrFox implying that I might ride a recumbent.
