My, how plans can change...

The Tejas 500, which is the 500 mile race in The Texas Time Trials, starts Thursday. I rode in this race last year, as a part of the 4 man recumbent relay team, the Reclining Flyers. Being the only recumbent team, we set the event recumbent record, but only had the second fastest overall time that's been done by a 4 man team in the event. With less lung tissue this year, I decided to make the flatter Hotter 'N Hell Hundred the only event where I really went for time, and skip this more hilly event.

TTTT is the only RAAM qualifying ultra marathon race in this part of the country, so while I decided to leave the racing to faster riders, my wife and I did sign up as volunteers to help put on the event. Two of the faster riders from the Reclining Flyers added a couple of other fast riders and are out to try and get the overall 500 mile 4 man team record. Four friends, three men and one woman, also formed a mixed 4 person recumbent team for the 500 mile race, calling themselves the Mixed Bag of Nuts. I was glad to see more local recumbents participating this year, but content to sit on the sidelines. But that would never do...

Monday, three days before the race, the Mixed Bag of Nuts lost one team member to a family emergency. They could only think of one recumbent rider in the area who was not already participating in the race, and was capable, endurance wise, of even coming kind of close to a respectable time in this event on such short notice, and who wouldn't have enough common sense to just decline the frantic invitation. That, of course, would be me. And it was some of my best friends doing the asking. So, after thinking I'm winding down for the year, and doing no specific training for this event, I will be racing Thursday evening. Wish me luck, and if anyone has some anti-gravity pills they could lend me to help get me up those hills, I could use them right about now.

You with 1.5 lungs are tougher than most of the rest of us with two good ones.

Good luck, keep the rubber side down and don't fall asleep in that recliner! We expect a full and detailed report upon completion.

I think you are under-estimating yourself again. You've already exceeded what you thought you could do this year, I'm sure you'll amaze us one more time.

And the last thing he said to me, "Rock," he said, "sometime when the team is up against it and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to go out there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper. "Knute Rockne: All American"

Give 'em hell, Bud.

I have only ever been caught with the "Were one short -can you ride?" question once. But I had a month to prepare for it.

Luckily you have not started a wind down on your training yet so I reckon you should be OK.

Only thing is- Have you Carbo loaded- Have you been drinking enough water- and are you mentally prepared.

I reckon you must be mental- At this time of year you might get a fair amount of water on the event (Falling from the Sky) and you have to let the team know what your favourite snacks are for the ride. Then they can pass you the PIE after about 10 miles and the gateaux and cakes and buns at regular intervals to keep you going.

Just don't push it too hard or the Post ride Beers may not be enjoyable.

A couple of helium balloons tucked behind the seat might give you the boost you're looking for on the hills. Can't find any anti-gravity machines for sale on the internet.
Good luck.
