Highway 40 will open for biking and hiking on 12/14/08. Do any of the 50+ BF members plan to ride?

I'll bet it fills up quickly. The race is limited to 150 riders.

Hopefully, they'll let others ride at their leisure for the day.

Hopefully you can get out and ride on the new road-it is a once in a lifetime deal. Below is a "ride report" I did for the local cycling club on a solo ride I did on I-485 in Charlotte a week or so before it opened. It is on Page 6 of the pdf file.

The things I still recall is the quiet and peacefulness of it all-and how clean the road was-no litter or debris from vehicles. See the in-line skaters was a real hoot......

When I lived in San Diego years ago (in the late 60's), they opened a new freeway to bicycles before they allowed cars.

It was a mess. Too many bikes with inexperienced riders. There was a death, and the cops closed the whole thing down, you had to get off the freeway wherever you were, and get home the best you can. I had the family with me on their bikes, with Andy on my back in a carrier.

Hope yours turns out better.

being in stl, in the middle of december, i'd guess it is most likely that low temps will keep many inexperienced riders away from the event...

I'm thinking the cold and wind will most likely keep me away. Honestly, bicycling down an expressway doesn't sound like very much fun to me even if it were 70 and sunny.

Awh, come on.

I remember walking on highway 40 out in Chesterfield when it closed because of flooding in '93. Just the sheer immensity of the roadway was pretty amazing. You don't realize how big it really is until you get on it without cars and trucks.

If it is cold it will be even better because the crowds will be smaller.

I agree with Bob. I'm from St. Louis, and I remember when they opened up one big highway (could have been 270 but I'm not sure) and it was great fun to ride out there on this HUGE roadway with bikes.

Yes, there were some inexperienced cyclists out there, but far less than the Moonlight Ramble, for example. No problem really.

It reminds me of the line from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxie when Ford is telling Arthur how big the universe is. "You think it's a long way from your house to the Chemist's, but compared to the universe, that's peanuts!"

So you may think there's a good sized bike lane on your local trail or MUP, but compared to the Interstate, that's peanuts!
