My Frozen 50+ Brothers and Sisters, Please Check In

How are you holding up in the midst of the deep freeze? Anybody getting any miles in? If you live in Sandy Eggo or Costa Rica, you answer these questions at grave personal peril.

colorado dale 01-14-09 07:17 PM

I got in 11 miles (which exceeds jan 2008)
with month to date snow in summit county at approx 50 inches
i consider that good

my season to date ski days is now at 35

Well I don't live in either of those places, but close enough to find myself in "grave personal peril" should I answer these questions. I will only say that so far this year I've ridden 206 miles, i.e. not much.

Rick / OCRR (about 120 miles North of Sandy Eggo)

I average a Coach Troy workout every three days. I'll be interested how that translates into actual biking, if it ever gets warm enough to do it.

It's supposed to be around 12 degrees at the start of Saturday morning's ride........ with highs below freezing. Just got my new gloves today so I'm very excited to see how they do.

Does anyone know if carbon will crack with temps in the teens??? If so how do you distinguish between that sound and teeth chattering**********

I always knew you belonged at the top of the class.

The deep freeze hasn't quite hit Virginia yet but it was about 25F today. That's about 10F lower than normal. I rode my 17.5 mile round trip to work w/o too many issues.

waldowales 01-14-09 09:15 PM

Got in twelve miles today. The temp was mid forties, light breeze, bright sun. A few nasty icy spots, but mostly good.

Tom Bombadil 01-14-09 09:19 PM

It's -5 here right now, going down to -15 by morning. Current wind chill is -22. Tomorrow's high predicted to climb up to -2, then drop to -19 tomorrow night (that's 51 degrees below freezing point). Wind chills of -30 to -35 are expected.

I'm not riding, but on my walk to my car after work, I saw three people riding bikes. They were very bundled up, with face protection.

I have 92 miles in on the year so far.

I had the day off today, and with the 10°F forecast high, it was a good day to stay in and work on bikes. Details here…

Two more days of these temps, but I have to work both days, so I'll be out racking up the miles again.

Wow! And I was complaining about the fact I had to drag out my summer fans... it was in the high 80's today. It's mid January for gosh sakes... it needs to be cool (but not cold).

Randochap 01-14-09 09:58 PM

The "Pineapple Express" has washed away the snow ... and a few houses. The roads are clear again.

Got in 90km (56 mi) today, on the Wednesday ride for a 2009 total of 265 km (164 mi). It was overcast and 5C (41F). Tough going!

Digital Gee 01-14-09 10:00 PM

It's winter? I nearly forgot. :D:D:D

RepWI 01-14-09 10:26 PM

I did 12 miles yesterday and none today. It will get down to -20F by morning with wind chills between -35F & 45F. I won't be riding tomorrow either.

Many of the schools in our area have already decided to close.

JanMM 01-14-09 10:34 PM

Pathetically small number of miles in 2009. I'm so ashamed......
Supposed to get up to +1 degree F tomorrow.

Might as well live in Wisconsin or Minnesota or one of those other Provinces......

MNBikeguy 01-14-09 10:35 PM

Getting a bit bored sitting home the last few days so I made some pie.
I did go out for a few miles today. Was surprisingly comfortable layered in my Gore shell, but find breathing is difficult beyond around 10 below; even balaclava filtered air.

Mojo Slim 01-15-09 12:25 AM

We got in a good 60 mile ride today, with 4000 ft of climbing, mostly in the first 30 miles. While the climbing was tough, trying to figure out what to wear was tougher. We started at 8:30am in 33 degree weather, with a forecast (which came true) of 65. Wool short sleeve undershirt with arm warmers, long sleeve jersey, wind vest and wind breaker turned out to be versatile enough. Peeled layers away as the day wore on. Except for a couple of the climbs, felt pretty good.

I was just preparing this years ride log by clearing my spreadsheet from last year. By this time in January last year, I had 4 rides in. This year I have nada. Also nada for past December. Temp has been below normal pretty much since Nov 28th, my last ride. Got train platform removed, looks like I'll be using the trainer for next 6 weeks. 8 degrees Thursday night, and 2 for Friday night. Did I mention I'm in SOUTH East PA.

No cycling miles yet for '09. What is that formula for changing aerobic snow shoveling into equivalent riding miles?

Forecast is for 0F (-18C) and below for next few days.

Artkansas 01-15-09 03:59 AM

So far so good, but they say it will get nippy this evening. No snow expected though. :thumb:

Ummm. 1:1 ;)

linux_author 01-15-09 04:18 AM

it's really cold here this morning (53F) - we'll be doing our normal 20-miler today...

(when you're used to warm weather all the time, the 50s feels *really* cold, especially at 15+mph)

:-)
