Hopefully Spring is right around the corner

Here in the nice southern Satate of North Carolina, I was hoping for a good weekend to ride. Thursday it was 60 and friday it was 58. Saturday it started raining and was about 40 and on sunday at 1319 it is nopw a mix of sleet and snow with a suspected 4 to 8 inches of snow falling this afternoon thru tonight. So instead of a nice weekend ride on the bikes we are sitting in front of the fireplace eating bowls of home made chile and fresh home made bread. I just hope the weather improves soon. Have not had a chance to ride since January.

It sounds like you need a weekend job with Thursdays and Fridays off.

Sorry....it was just too good to pass up. :o

I can verify that accordng to my Almanac- Spring is not too far away. But neither is Autumn. It doesn't say anything about Summer this year though.

Spring is right around the corner. Only, how far away is the corner?

This has been one of the coldest winters in a very long time. Doesn't seem very much like global warming does it? I was listening to a program today that said world wide this year was colder than last year world wide. How does that work?

But still today was almost perfect. 70 degrees with no wind. I thought I was in a disney movie.

Globally, 2008 was slightly cooler than 2007, although it was still the 8th warmest year on record.

You may be right but I am beginning to smell another "experts predict" Ozone hole theory. I was reading about the little ice age in Europe the other day. Also I found the history of Greenland and Iceland to be interesting. But there were no experts telling the Vikings about global warming.

But I am looking forward to Spring as I am sure some of our frozen neighbors in Kentucky who have had the worst winter in how long? But I did discover they are measuring against a 100 year average of the last century. We are into 9 years of this century so I am skeptical that the average will be the same after the other 91 years we have to go. But that is just me. ;)

How many days a year can you ride in Alaska?

big chainring 03-03-09 07:54 PM

This is what I encountered on Saturday. North Branch bike path in Chicago. This section is always the last to melt, sun doesnt hit it. So it was a short ride in 25 degree weather. Nice to get out though, and my vintage Peugeot that I refurbished rode great. Tomorrow 40+ degrees. I'll give it a go, hopefully this section will melt by the afternoon.

Believe it or not, there are those that ride all year....even when it's -40F or colder! Not me though...I usually start riding when the majority of the snow is melted back off the road shoulders. That can be sometime in April in a good year. I generally ride until the end of September, maybe a week or so into October when the snow starts sticking.

Robert Foster 03-03-09 11:51 PM

I have been to Juno and Ketchacan (sp) in September and it wasn't bad. But if it ever got colder than my freezer or my fridg I think I would just stay inside. The only thing that bothers me here is in the summer there are times I have to get my road ride in early. Leave the house by 6 or 7 am and be back inside by 10am. But even on those days I can still ride the MTB around the lake if I don't push it.

That looks nice for Spring in Wisconsin.

Unfortunately for us, it won't be 70 here this weekend, like it will be there.

Boudicca 03-04-09 07:51 PM

Forecast is for things to finally climb above freezing for the rest of this week.

Unfortunately that forecast also calls for rain for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

I have pumped the tires up on one bike, to save time if I want to sneak out between the raindrops.

Daylight time begins tomorrow; weather appears to be on a warming trend with the snow rapidly vanishing. I just called up my local bike shop to make an appointment next Saturday for having the studded winter tires removed from my bike.
