kept up with the club ... on my Schwinn :)
I was running late for my rendezvous with my local YMCA's MasterFit group, so I jumped on my trusty 28 lb. old school mountain bike instead of taking the time to extract one of the road bikes from the garage rafters. I pumped the Bontrager Revolt-X knobbies to a full 70 PSI and actually managed to keep up with the group, most of whom were riding sub-20 lb 21st Century road machines. I don't think I could have done so well without my bar extensions, which greatly facilitate out-of-saddle climbing.
I was the second-oldest person on the second-oldest (1988) bike -- I was gratified to see an older fellow show up with an early 1970s Peugeot UO-8 with beautiful concave Weinmann aluminum rims and SunTour derailleurs, but the original cottered crankset. He is finally going to break down and buy himself a new bike and has been looking at the Surly Long Haul Trucker.

MasterFit group at your local Y? What's this? Mine has kids' and teens' programs and "Silver Sneakers." I'm too old for the former and too young for the latter.

Good story; thanks for sharing. I can ride a mountain bike quickly for about two blocks, then I start whimpering and wishing for a road bike.

With this group I generally alternate between the Capo, which is stable, comfortable, and otherwise delightful on a long ride, and the brown Bianchi, which is my climbing and sprinting "Italian stallion." I was surprised to find that I was actually a bit faster on the Capo, until I realized that I had set the Bianchi's saddle a few silly mm lower.

As young kids, both of my sons went through their excellent progressive swim program, and the younger one, the family jock, was a decent roller hockey player and a basketball MVP there.
