Matt Lauer (50+ rider) hits a deer on his bike..

NEW YORK – A flip off his bicycle took "Today" show co-host Matt Lauer off the air Monday with a shoulder injury.

Lauer, 51, was riding his bicycle this weekend when a deer jumped into his path. He flipped over the bike's handlebars and was slightly hurt, NBC said.

"Today" show publicist Megan Kopf said Lauer separated his shoulder and was scheduled to have surgery Monday.

"He's doing well, and we hope to have him back on `Today' later this week," Kopf said in an e-mail.

Lauer's broadcast partner, Meredith Vieira, joked on the air that Lauer thinks the deer was hired by the competition.

"Matt's banged up with a displaced shoulder, it popped out," she said. "So hopefully he'll be on the mend soon."

Lester Holt filled in as Vieira's co-host Monday

If he's been riding a lowracer, he could have gone right under that sucker and not crashed.

I've had deer run in front of me during fast descents - scary, because you know you'd be on the floor and they'd be kicking you and biting you until you got untangled or whatever.

my son did the same last august. he was desending a hill and t-boned a big doe at about 40 mph. he ended with a lot of road rash. bike was totaled, carbon frame broke behind the head set. of course the zip front wheel was badly damaged. oh the deer was killed so i guess the son won. it occured 4 weeks before the ironman wisconsin that he was training for all year and had to pull out of. he did get 6 grand from the insurance company.

Is Lauer a road biker?

I'm lucky I haven't hit a deer, knock on wood.

Who is Matt Lauer? But also, did he hit the deer, or just jump on the brakes when the deer got in front of him? It is not clear. It may be that he did not make contact with the deer but came close and spilled it, braking.
Deer have killed people on motorcycles, probably also cars.

"Vieira said that the deer apparently leapt in front of Lauer, who slammed on his brakes to avoid a collision. The sudden stop threw him off the bike and onto his shoulder. Luckily, Lauer was wearing a helmet.

Lauer, 51, is an avid cyclist who has ridden a bike on TODAY on a number of occasions, most recently around the Olympic velodrome in Beijing. He also rode a bike last year in the Netherlands during his annual “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” globe-girdling trip. "
