50+ Weight Loss Challenge - 2008

I tired of wading through the mass of posts under the old thread and started a new one for this year.

1/08/2007 - 149.8
12/24/2007 - 137.0 (-12.8)

My goal for 2008 is 130, more muscle and less fat

1/2/2008 - 137.6 Too many holiday goodies. Time to get back on track.

I saw my doctor Friday for a complete physical and bloodwork to be sure I'm as healthy on the inside as on the outside. According to his scale:

12/28/07: 147

Goal: 135

Good bye, pecan pie. Hello, Kashi Go Lean Light.

I could easily, and actually probably should attempt to survive solely on Kashi products. Love their flax bars.

1/07 - 214
12/07 - 184
Goal for 12/08 - 175

I gave away a bunch of pants this year, and I just bought a bunch of new shirts, several sizes smaller. It's much more fun being a M or L, instead of an XL.

Wow. Some of you have very aggressive goals.

Anyway: today -- 210.5.
October of this year -- 190. That's the date of my med school's 30 year reunion. I don't have to be buff for that one, for there is no one I seek to impress. I just don't want to appear bloated like I do now.

I'm trying to get my weight down for an important race series coming up in the latter part of February.

My last weigh-in for 2007 (on Dec. 27th) was 168.2 lbs.

My first weigh-in for 2008 (this morning) was 164.4 lbs. (3.8 lbs lost in 6 days!).

And that's not a fluke or due to hydration status. I just got back from a 5 day vacation in Death Valley National Park. My girlfriend and I intentionally ate "healthy and light" (lots of protein and veggies, totaling around 1700 calories per day), while running and hiking a lot. My abdomen is down to 30.5", and my body fat is estimated at 10.1%.

For a 5' 11" 55-year old...that's pretty darned good I think, and a good way to start the year. Just hope it helps me to be fast too!

I'm dumb enough to feel great that I only gained 3-5 lbs over the holiday "break". Not happy about it, you understand; I just historically have gained more in the past that I did this year. I just exhibited a little care and made sure I kept getting my miles in. I am now ~195, down from 225 less than two years ago. My goal this year is to reach and hold the 180's (185 sounds fine. I'll certainly take less). Once there, I'll reassess my next goal, if any.

O.K. I'm in, lets start fresh. 3 mos. ago I weighed 204, as of 1/2/08 I was 209. Where I want to be is 190, but I will be tickled to see 195. I'll try to update around the 1st of each month.

My best weight loss of the year should be tomorrow: I'm having 40 staples removed.

Well, urban legend has it that on the average a person gains 5 pounds during the period from Thanksgiving through New Years. And the total weight of the human race maintains an equilibrium. So I am happy that someone else out there in the universe got my 5 pounds.

This is brutal - my Russian cycling coach told me tonight that he wants me to be at 110. I started working with him one month ago. Three times a week I have to weigh in before and after my session on the rollers. My weight has been between 113 - 115. I could tell he was not happy just by those looks. The reality is I know he is right! (BTW, I am 5' 4 1/2" but a small frame.)

I'm down 2 lbs since Thanksgiving to 183. I'm 6'3" and my goal is my competitive weight of 172. We'll see how that goes but I have until May to get there. I'm a little conflicted about my weight this year. I plan to do a TT series which is all on the flat but my local rides and organized events are all in the mountains. I worry that I might lose some power for the TT at the lower weight while my climbing is improved. Hopefully I will continue to develop my power while I lose weight and have the best of both.
