LBS heaven

For several years I have been patronizing my LBS which is a Trek/Lemond/Gary Fisher dealer. I happen to like Trek so that has been fine with me. However, I really like Specialized equipment like gloves and tires and I want to try some shoes and check out their saddles.
Imagine my delight when a Specialized dealer (they also carry Cervelo) opened up this spring right around the corner from the Trek dealer.
And then I find out that their is a Giant dealer a mere 15 minute drive from my house. I hope they all survive for many years. Of course, there are other dealers for these brands in Montreal, but these ones are so convenient and so close.
Does anybody else bask in the glow of multiple LBSes?

There are 6 LBSs within a 10 minute walk of my office. Three more within a 10 minute bike ride from my office. And a total of like 16 or 17 within a 20 minute drive from my office.

Within an hour's drive are the company headquarters of Trek (and Gary Fisher), Cannondale, Schwinn, GT, Waterford, and Planet Bike. As well as at least another 4 or 5 small shops that hand build custom bikes.

Wow! It's like Wisconsin exerts some kind of gravitational pull which sucks in all the bike shops.

In Eastbourne, the local big town, there are 3 good bike shops. Plus a couple of retail store that sell bikes. I have used my LBS for about 15 years and don't bother to go to the other two good shops.

I went to one- the Specialised dealer- just to look at mountain bikes about 8 years ago. I was just getting back into cycling after the prostate problem and they seemed to think I was too old for Mountain biking. I had already been on MTB's for 10 years but they when I mentioned going offroad- they tried to put me off riding there. They tried to sell me one of those Don't do anything good bikes. The "Specialised Sirrus" as it would do everything I want it to do. Following week I turned up on the Tandem and they still tried to tell me that offroad was too hard for and old git like me. Only ever been back there once and that was because they have a good stock of gloves. I arrived on Boreas and they tried to tell me I had bought a "Bum" bike. never been back there since.

The other shop is solely MTB and carry a few names I do not know and the lower end bikes- but they do have a good range of spares. Problem is that They are never open when I go there so no real chance to look round the shop.

I'll stick to my current LBS. At least they like the coffee I make and do occasionally feel it worthwhile to get the buns in.

75 or 80 bike shops in the Seattle area:

https://www.cascade.org/Community/Bike_Shops.cfm

Several are exceptional.

Bikes are custom made at two - Davidson operates at Elliott Bay Cyles, Rodriguez is made at R&E cycles.

Several local bike shops have "museums" of vintage bikes.

etc. etc.

Glad I do not live in your town. My wife would spell heaven, D-i-v-o-r-c-e, with that many places to lighten the wallet.

There are several good bike shops close to our house, and I use them when I need some bit quickly. Still, I don't mind going the extra miles (5 or 6, I think) to the bike shop I really like.

Yes, having that many LBSs is both a blessing and a curse.

And they come without intense traffic & crowded conditions. Madison's traffic isn't bad. I live 12 miles from my office, the last 8 of which are open farmland. So rural that I have to make a 12 mile round trip if I need milk, bread, or eggs. Likewise for the nearest restaurant. But as of about 3 years ago, we can now get pizza delivered.

Wow, Never thought of Wisconsin as such an avid biking state, is that just your area which has such an abundance of bike related businesses?

Most of them are located in the SE region of Wisconsin.

But biking is very popular across the state. We have close to 700 miles of bike trails. Here in Madison thousands of people commute via bicycle, the MUPs are very busy during the rush hours. Of course the 40,000 students here at UW-Madison use a lot of bikes.

There's a bicycle museum in Sparta, WI. And perhaps the nation's largest recumbent LBS is in Stevens Point, WI, which is in the central part of the state. There are also many organized rides all across the state.

"Outside" magazine rated Madison as the #1 city for road biking in the USA in 2005. "Bicycling" magazine rated it as the #1 city for cycling in 2006. The 2016 Chicago Olympic committee, which is putting together Chicago's bid for those Olympics, has selected Madison and Dane County as the venue for the cycling events, should they win that bid.

Biking is a fairly large industry here. Most of the people I know ride bikes. When I was director of my old department, all four of the managers who reported to me were active riders. And so was my boss.
