Nice find in a shed at a yard sale (pics)

For the past two weekends my wife and I have been hitting the yard sales looking for bikes to fix up for people in need of cheap transportation. I posted about it last week and got some good ideas about finding parts. So far we have given the Family Resource Center 11 ready to ride bikes at an average cost of ~$12.00 each. Today at a yard sale I asked about bikes and told them what I wanted them for. An old guy sitting in a lawn chair said he might sell one of his bikes but they were not the kind I was looking for. He said it had sew up tires on it. I told him I also ride and if he had a good bike I might be interested in buying it for myself. He took me to his back yard and opened the door to a small wooden shed. About half way back on the side was a Schwinn Paramount with a very well used Brooks saddle on it. I headed straight for it and he said, "oh no, not that one, I'm not quite ready to get rid of that just yet. The one for sell is in the back corner". I looked back in the corner and there was a nice Motobecane mixte and another Motobecane. He said the Mens Motobecane was the one he would sell. It was in very good condition and the price was pretty good so I bought it. It is too small for me but I might fix it up for my wife to ride. Here are a couple of pictures

Oh yes! Nice find. I could never pass up a bike like that either.

Now you know where that Paramount lives...you can keep an eye on things, perhaps even give the guy your contact info in case he changes his mind.

Is that a Grand Jubile? The paint scheme is identical or almost identical to a nice mixte I sold to KPUG

An excellent find - mostly Campy components. I paid $350 for an 86 Grand Record (a bit much). I changed out the components and it's a very sweet ride.

Very cool find. Now you got to go visit that guy every once and a while so that when he is ready to sell the Paramount, your the one he think about.

Lugged steel - my heart goes pitter patter...
Reynolds 531 tubing is nothing to sneeze at - was used for a long time in race frames. Is the frame fully plated under the paint or are just the ends chromed?

I have to ask, even though it will make most of us ill, how much?
Of course with those dropouts in the rear, this screams single speed.

When he asked me what I thought it was worth I told him it was his bike and I would rather him tell me what he wanted for it. He said "how about $40.00?". I didn't try to haggle with him, I just bought it.

The butted Reynolds main triangle (3 tubes renforces) would make the frame about equivalent to a Peugeot PR-10/PKN-10, a delightful bike I would still own if it had fit me properly. You have the good moly steel alloy where you need really need it, and I'll bet there is very little practical difference between your Moto and the costlier full-Reynolds model. Tres cool!

No, It is a Grand Record.
We still have our Grand Jubilees from the early '70's. I always wanted a Le Team Champion in 'arnch. Nice acquisition.

If I remember correctly, the Grand Jubilees sold for about $265 in 1975. About $2300 in 2009 dollars. Sounds about right.

Same color combination as the circa 1973 Motobecane Le Champion that I bought new in Madison, WI. I paid $350 for it without the wheels. Much to my disappointment, Motobecane used the same color combination the following year for one of their cheapest models. I kept the Le Champion until a couple years ago when I donated it to a local outfit that provided bicycles to people too poor to afford a car. Nobody I knew wanted an old road bike even though it was still in cherry shape and had Phil Wood hubs on the wheels. I got a lot of use out of the bike over the years but it got way too uncomfortable for me as I got older.

May I suggest you post on the Classic & Vintage forum under the Vintage Value subforum to find out the value of that bike. I'm guessing it's going to be over $200, but I'm not a Motobecane expert. You might want to consider selling it and using the money to finance your excellent work. On the other hand, that is a beautiful riding frame and your wife will love it.
I'm not in your league donation wise, but this year I donated 5 bikes from my stash and spent a Saturday with three other wrenches and a group of teens from our church fixing up old bikes. We turned out over 60 bikes. A very rewarding experience.
