What do the jersey colors mean?

I did a search, but couldn't find a thread on it, so thought I'd ask.

Watching the Giro and they talk about the pink jersey, white jersey, etc. I heard of the yellow jersey, polka-dot jersey, rainbow jersey, etc. Could somebody explain what the different colored jerseys mean? Are they the same for every race or do different races use different colors?

Just trying to become a better informed cyclist.

Thanks all,
Dan'o :** The Still slightly FNG

Pink -- overall time leader, unless it's TdF, in which case it's yellow.
White -- best rookie/young rider.
Green -- best sprinter.
White with red polka dots -- king of the mountain.
There's also a jersey for the bravest rider but I forget what it looks like.

Rainbow jersey -- world champion.
Each country also has a special jersey for the national champion.

Google is your friend.

Some of the jerseys mentioned above are correct for the Tour de France, but the Giro has different designations.

"Whereas the overall leader of the Tour de France is awarded a yellow jersey (originally to correspond with L'Auto 's yellow pages), since 1931 the overall leader in the Giro sports the maglia rosa (pink jersey), which corresponds with newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport 's pink newsprint. The "King of the Mountains" wears the maglia verde (green jersey). The leader of the points classification wears the maglia ciclamino (mauve jersey), the best young rider wears the maglia bianca (white jersey)."

OK, so it's not really standardized between the different races, but now I have an idea of what stuff means. It's a drag when the announcer says so and so won the white jersey, then doesn't define what that means.

Thanks all, I'm learnin more every day!!
