    OT (mostly): Clapton and Winwood

I know that Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton both played with Ginger Baker who was a bicycle racer at one time. How's that for a topical connection?

I've just watched video of the Clapton/Winwood concert from Madison Square Garden on my PBS station. I think I'm in heaven. I will be getting a copy of the CD and possibly the DVD soon. Really good stuff.

Saw that too. Whats not to like. Clapton rules and I Winwood is a pretty fair guitar player too but mostly known for keyboards IIRC

    Didn't know Winwood played guitar.
They don't do an acoustic, zzzzzzzzzz-inducing version of Layla, do they?

I really enjoyed Ginger Baker when he played with Cream. What a surprise that he raced bicycles!! Besides being a spectacular drummer, Ginger was infamous for keeping crappy time. I hope his cycling cadence was more rhythmic.

Didn't they both die in with Leonard Skinnard and Buddy Holly in 1981 when their plane crashed into Ricky Nelson's on a cross country tour? Or do they just sound that way?

sold all my vinyl a few years ago. I bet there are some Traffic albums available on those new-fangled CD things. CDUniverse is a good source of music that is absent from your local Best Buy.

PRETTY FAIR?!?! Most of the guys I've played with over the years would say he's a bit beyond just a pretty fair guitar player. I'd be very happy if I could play as well as he does.

BD: I haven't seen the Madison SQ Garden concert, but did see Winwood and Clapton on the latest Clapton Crossroads concert and smiled for days.

If you want the original Clapton, Winwood, Baker, get the Blind Faith CD - it is great. I saw them at the state fair grounds outside Milwaukee in 1969. Is the Madison Square video from back then or is it a current collaboration?

That tour will be stopping here--I hope to see it.
Speaking of that era--Dave Mason was here playing a benefit for US military vets a few weeks ago--couldn't go, unfortunately, had to work. Does he bike?

I saw that. Outstanding. I hope the DVD is well-produced, so the sound quality is good. There are a lot of good players on that stage...

I think you might see Eric Clapton on the Cinelli site. Fond of bikes, fond of Italian engineering, despite his view in his autobiography that "having 15 Ferraris is enough to give anybody the blues"

And, anyone else love Traffic's "On the Road" live album from about 1975? Reebop Qaku Bah, worth listening too just for his name

Traffic's "At the Canteen" is also available on cd and is a great album besides. I also have it on vinyl, however, I need to buy a new needle for my turntable and I've been spending my money on bike stuff.

    Ditto

    Ditto on Blind Faith
Time was when I knew who was playing by the sound..time was.
Ton of great groups that lasted 6 months due to the clash in egos.
Still have the "Want to Join the Airforce? Join Gingers!" patch from God only knows when.
Definite must watch on the pbs special.
I heard vinyl was making a comeback..boy I hope so.

Several mentions of Clapton and Baker- but no-one has mentioned "Cream"

Name dropping now- Many Many moons ago- I played in a group and we used to do a lot of bookings in the Pubs and Clubs in London. Playing at one of our regular Pubs and our manager asked what we were doing when we finished as he had just been approached by a "BIG" Agent for a group to play at a club- starting at 2 AM. The Backing group to the main one had just dropped out and he wanted an answer quick. We said yes and it was the Marquee. The big Blues venue for the cognicant. Got their- did our 30 minutes before the main group came on and went backstage. Then the main group played and it was Cream. We didn't get to do our second slot as They played right through to 5 am with us out in front just listening to them. Boy what a night and we didn't have to pay to listen to our Idols.

Never got to play with them again although we did get a few more backing group bookings there.
How long was I in the army? Five foot seven.
