27.1 miles (43.6k). Shoulder hurts before the first mile but that's no excuse not to ride

Had heart surgery a little over 5 1/2 years ago (Merry Christmas to me!) and kept up with the same lousy habits. I'm trying to do better now, but it's a big change & a lot of work.
It all counts.

When I resumed cycling two years ago this month I could barely ride a mile. I'd get winded and had to stop every 400 yards. Lifelong asthma has gotten worse. And I've added thyroid disease and chronic back and neck pain from an old car wreck. So my goals were pretty modest.

30+ years ago when I was in my 20s I commuted 20 miles a day and rode many longer rides on weekends and occasional century rides with a casual group. Seems like I had boundless energy. But two years ago I thought riding 10 miles without stopping to rest was impossible, and that I'd never ride farther than that again.

It still doesn't come easily. I'll always be a very middle-of-the-pack rider in my age group locally. I look fit, same weight as at my peak in my 20s. But most of the local A group 50-60something guys (and some women) who look paunchy can blow me away, especially on hills.

Doesn't bother me. Every ride is a treat, however long or short. Surviving every ride is even better, since I ride in traffic as well -- although the multi-use path has its own hazards, including free range dogs.

We had an 87% eclipse here in Gainesville, and it actually got darker afterwards because of the clouds, and it stayed that way throughout a late afternoon ride. Just over 42 miles in much cooler temperatures than usual. Even though this is Florida, fall isn't too far away, I can feel it.

Glad to hear you're doing so much better! I took a little different route tonight. Didn't get as far as I wanted to, but it was a lot more 'uphill' than I've been doing. Still right at 2 miles, about 3/4 of what I'd wanted to do.

12 mile hard ride during eclipse - new meaning for COOL ride. Ventured on short section CO 149 - never again - no shoulder and cars coming closer than I like. We were in 80 coverage area with heavy cloud cover so it really was cool.

No ride yesterday. This morning's 40 mile ride with the guys was going great until one of them got a blowout. Of course, it was on the rear wheel and the problem turned out to be a separation of the sidewall at the bead. Good thing for tire boots, is all I can say. We didn't think it was going to hold because of where the tire was separated but it did hold long enough to get him back to the parking lot. It's the most excitement I've had on this particular route in quite some time.

3' and 5' VO2max intervals this morning. I drop my bag at the office then head across the river to a nice smooth bit of road where I like to do my shorter intervals. It'll be built up with houses within a year I bet, but for now it's sufficiently rural to even take a nature break in the weeds next to the road if I have to.

Easy 10 mile midday ride, trying to recover from pushing a mite too hard Sunday. Tweaked the saddle tilt on the hybrid after reinstalling the lower flat bar.

51 miles with the steady 10 mile grade up to the mountains. Was passed by a 20 year old woman, she was tired and slowed down right after catching and passing me so I stayed on her tail for a while until she recovered then she slowly pulled away.

23.68 miles today. The fastest ride I have ever done at 14.7 mph average.

Had some pretty good climbs on it too!

Very hot at the start, over 100 with the humidity factored in. Took me an hour and six minutes to peddle the 21 miles to Williston, an hour and two on the return. Another whiff of fall on the way back as I hit a few "cool" spots along lower parts of the Archer path. And sunset is noticeably earlier, I'm going to have to double check my lighting.

Got rained out from bike commuting today but weather great this evening so out for a seven mile very local ride including a few short, steepish hills and one newly-paved downhill which is much more fun than when it was rough-surfaced.

16 miles at 9.8 mph avg. Gotta love riding at high elevations. Daily high's in the upper 60's. Home - Houston high 90's. Low temp and low humidity equal sweatless rides. But I sure do miss pavement.

I got 21 miles in this morning before the heat kicked in. Today was the first day this week that it wasn't foggy out. Felt good but humid as heck. Also was glad to get an average speed of 18.9. I knew I should have pushed it harder to get to the 19mph target.

Not sure I'm saying this right, but it seems like going up hill is more extra work than going down hill is less work.

Got 2.7 miles in in about 20 minutes. I'll go again here in a few hours.

27.7 miles (44.6k). Cool to start (63°) so arm sleeves but sunny. Good riding day. Dusted off the Tarmac for today's ride, had a rear flat. Then I discovered a rear flat on the older Roubaix from the last ride (sigh), but at least it's at home.
Took the Roubaix Pro to pick up the car (6.2 miles) in dangerous traffic.

I wasn't going to ride today after almost 180 miles the past four days....but since Greybeard posts his YTD total (great idea, BTW), and we've been playing tortoise and hare mileage-wise (and I can only get out after work), I may do so to give myself a bit of a cushion. My rides average just above 40 miles, and I've been pushing pretty hard and managed to cobble together a few heavy riding months.

Besides, I'm in FL and sooner or later he's going to run out of weather .

But dang, they canceled my Roubaix Pro for 2018, so it's either the Expert, or an S-Works with ETap or DuraAce. We'll find out Friday or Saturday when I'm at the LBS in VA.

Did a little ride today with my buddy who's visiting from SoCal. He in his newly acquired 1998 LeMond Zurich. Me in a Jamis Coda Comp that I just rebuilt and will be flipping soon. I threw on a set of carbon wheels with some Rubino Pro Slicks temporarily just to lighten it up a bit for our rides.

13 miles Wednesday night, easy pace and route, just stretching the legs. Overdid it this weekend and the legs are taking longer than usual to recover.
