Just put my neglected '92 Paramount MTB in the shop for new rapidfires, cables, and FD yesterday. Just lost my mother Monday night so, after the funeral and friends Thursday, I hope to have a highlight of the day at least by picking up my ride. My mother's passing, after having beat cancer for 13 years, reminds me that you have to take care of yourself. I will be buying my wife a new Trek soon so we can start getting back in shape. I hope my knee holds up having two miniscus surgeries over the past 6 years in the same spot. Better than running on it. As soon as I can get a deal on another saddle, I'll be able to air up the skinnies on the Schwinn Tempo as well. I've been off the bike too long and now will have to do some bike wardrobe overhaulling as well.....not to be a poser or anything. Just toooooo old to look like a noob.

Still trying to recover from Saturday's 200k. 1 hour on the rollers, 1/2 zone 1, the other half 2 minute one-legged pedaling intervals. Didn't hurt that bad while doing them. I'll see what the damage is tomorrow, when I'm supposed to do a couple threshold intervals, also on the rollers.

Big1,
Sorry to hear about losing your mother, that one is a real blow to any of us.

Welcome to the 50+ Forum, glad that you are getting the 'Mount shaped up and ready to ride. Don't sweat the wardrobe, we run the gamut here in our sartorial choices, everything from shorts and sandals to team kit and the points in between. At our age we pretty much don't care what others think about that, we just like to ride and enjoy the miles.

Bill

Cincinnati Blue Ash area Tuesday. 17+ miles. Incredible how you realize you suck at real hills! Central Ohio is really pretty flat.

44 miles for yesterday's ride and 35 for this morning's ride. Not as windy as yesterday but there were some pretty strong gusts.

Finally feel like the knee is totally healed, this week is at 117.xx miles so far, 25+ today and the three previous, also. Opened the week on Monday with a 15 to see if things felt alright when I pushed it a little and did a few hill intervals. Nothing risky still for a few weeks, than back to my usual slow old self ad opposed to my old, really slow, gimpy self. The weather has been too good to pass up, too. Mid 70s and blue skies, winds are still up, though.

Good climbing day, 48 miles and 3500' of climbing. I'm attempting a Century on April 10 with 6000' of climbing; I feel better about this after having a good day today. The catch is that 1/2 of the 6000' is in one climb and it just seems to go on forever.

Had the day off for my birthday (which is actually Monday), so did a little riding during the weekday. 50 miles from my home, down to DC, over to Bethesda, and back via the Capital Crescent Trail and some other urban roads. It never got as warm as they predicted but it was still pretty nice.

In other news: I'm still fat.

21 miles today with a friend. We're both working back from winter, but I have a feeling he's getting more back than I am. Oh well. It was still fun.

85 miles with 8400 ft of climbing. I think I had 6000 ft of climbing at about 50 miles.......Lots of hills with grades of 6-8%. Several climbs with grades of 10-13%. One 2 mile climb with 3 sections at 19%..........just gotta love the NC mountains. The 19% sections came at about 50 miles and just wiped me out. Those took so much out of me I really struggled the last 35 miles. Started feeling puny at 55 miles so stopped at a store and ate two large chocolate cupcakes. They were really, really good........

21 miles on the tandem this afternoon in mid-40's cloudy weather. But dry.
Still a few cold days forecast for the coming week but it is officially Spring!

Thanks for the fix

Did my longest ride of the year on Saturday, the WABA VASA ride from the Swedish Embassy in Georgetown out and about in Montgomery County, MD. The ride was 59 miles, and was very well attended. I rode to and from the ride for a total of about 83 miles. Legs were feeling it on the way home, but I'm finally feeling a little strong. I know I could have done 100 as long as the last 17 were all flat

Nice! Cupcakes work, but I like a big gooey blueberry muffin

Hope to see some of those NC hills this summer. I've been planning road trip down that way for several years, but other rides, and illness have gotten in the way. This could be the year.

Funny----I actually looked at the Blueberry muffins first but my stomach was screaming for the chocolate cupcakes! Hope you can find some time to do some NC roads.

You might check out this new two day organized event in Lake Lure in August. There are some nice roads to ride on in that area.

Got in my longest ride to date after returning from all the health issues, 30+ miles around the farms in our area, found some really nice roads with smooth, fresh pavement for a change. Beautiful weather, temps in the high 70's and blue bowl skies, south wind came up half way through to keep me honest. Managed to keep my speed up in the 15 mph area, too, no sprints to aggravate my knee.

Been down with a cold for the last two days, missing the charity ride I had planned for yesterday. Think I'll take an extra day off to make sure this thing is gone before venturing back out on the bike. My legs are saying, "let's go for a ride anyway", but my sinuses are saying, "go ahead and expect to be miserable."

Bill great news on your comeback. Keep up the good work and deciding whether to push or hold back!

Did 50 today and my average for the year. Hoping to enter Everglades Snowbird Sunday next and do a Century. Should be easier than first one last December with just two of us and little drafting. First group ride few weeks ago with Storm Riders. Lots of stop signs and they go 23 to 25 which was tough for me, at least didn't get dropped out of the blocks!

I rode during the Kentucky/Wichita State game and I felt like I was in the zombie apocalypse. Roads totally deserted except around the Walmart. At the mid 40s it was a bit nippy for my taste, although I didn't feel cold until I stepped into my house. Weird. UK won, BTW.

Now nothing will be accomplished this week as UK faces off against Louisville. Talk about apocalyptic.

Ten miles this afternoon and yes, low- to mid-forties felt too cold.
UK and Louisville will be playing? Living in Hoosier Nation, it seems as if college ball season is over.
