John and OTG,
Both of you take care with the tropical storm rolling up your way, possibly. Its no fun dealing with Hurricane Season, as Jimmy Buffet said in "Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season", back in the old days of the early 70s.

Bill,

Thanks for the concern. Probably more rain than wind but that is gonna put a hurtin for certain for our water logged ground.

As I type this, boss lady is about to clock out her last minute of her working career and for her birthday/retirement celebration we have a nice stay at Walt Disney World's Fort Wilderness Campground next week. Hoping the storm doesn't mess things up.

Everybody stay well.

52 miles on a really nice day. Hurricanes on the east coast do something nice for us on the west coast - they pull the humidity away from us.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternal windfest here, I was able to pull out the Goodwill Kona for my usual yard sale run. . . . .

Yes, I did ride today.....20 miles round trip to and from work. Took off a half day today so the ride home was noonish and traffic through downtown Indy and the southside to home was very light.

I've been reading about you hurricane guys and you have my sympathies. It's been great riding weather in Northern Nevada (sister state to Florida - the "duh" states). 23.4 miles, some climbing, great ride on the Roubaix. Lotza wind in the afternoons, mild in the AM. Temps should be in the low 80s next week.

08/29/15 - Rapides Parish, LA

42 miles this morning. Started with a good sized group from our bike club at 7 AM in gloriously cool temps (for us, here in August). A friend and I broke off and took a different route about 13 miles into it. Rode a few of what passes for hills around here... then again, a freeway overpass is a hill for me! Kinda nice to see my HR start dropping back when the hill is topped. It still goes UP, which I'm about to conclude is just how I "work", but it now comes back down. It doesn't drop like a rock from an overpass, but it does come down (which it used to take forever to do).

Lotza wind today. Most mornings it's 1-3mph but today started at 8mph at 8AM and climbed to over 20mph by the end of the ride. 15.5 miles on the Roubaix at an average of 15mph. The air temp was warm but windy.

Warm and humid this morning which beats sizzling or stormy. 58 very flat very rural miles on a club ride. Had intended to ride the medium 40ish mile route but was 5 miles into the longer route when I realized I was doing the long one - D'oh! Moving average of 17.1mph which near as I can remember is a best for me. Riding at the tail end of a group of faster (but not too fast) folks helps.
Faster folks:

Left my house late again this morning but rode the 5 miles to the LBS and arrived in time for the ride start. Group started with 10 but by mile 21.5 we had 5. Heart rate wasn't coming up the way I expect it should have and that gave me pause for concern. By mile 32.5 I was out front alone with another rider behind but not closing the gap. Sat up and waited then we shared the last 6.

Decided to do a bit more before packing things in so I wandered around for another 33 by myself at a slow 17.5mph average. It was a good day of riding and tomorrow will be walking plus swimming.

53 miles @ 16.9 mph with 1407 ft. 81 deg low humidity perfect summer weather in the Northeast. Really took it east for the first 30 min then picked it up. No break ride, didn't put a foot down from the time I started the Garmin to the time I turned it off.

Sorry... Only one photo from today's ride.

I rode west from the western suburbs of Richmond, VA out along Patterson Ave (Route 6) into Manakin Sabot area and around some of the more quieter roads out that way. 24.5 miles in 1 hr and 34 min, with an avg speed of 15.5 mph.

This was a distance shot looking south on Hockett Rd towards Route 6 (just up ahead and around the bend).

Best hope, for all of us in Florida, that it keeps diminishing. The Cone of Uncertainty keeps shifting westward, now Pensacola is in the darn thing. It won't be the first tropical event I ride in. Now its looking like it will probably enter the Gulf, and ride up near the west coast, or open water up to somewhere near here.

23 Screamer miles this morning with my favorite stoker. We rode up Foxhill Road in Morgan County - our first time up it on a tandem.

Success in my long search for a rack to fit the back of my Performer trike. The trikes are sold with them on, but finding one separately was difficult. The shipping from Taiwan was $85, un-doable. I had success with the friendly owner of RBR Recumbent Bike Riders Inc bike shop in Pennsylvania (I'm in Nevada), apparently the only "authorized" Performer dealer in the US. The rack was the same price ($40) as from the manufacturer (Performer) but the shipping was $12 - doable. The 6 pocket 30L pannier is from Roswheel (China) via ebay ($25).
I had to move the flag mount from the left because the rack fits there and poke n' sew a hole in the pannier for it to fit thru. 'Murican ingenuity.
The smaller black n' orange 3 pocket bag on the back of the seat is a B-Soul (also via ebay) made for bicycle seat posts, I use the same on the other three bikes.

15.6 comfortable miles @12mph on my usual Truckee River Bike Path route. A little cooler this week, long sleeves at 8AM.

43.4 miles @ 16.7 mph with 1083 ft. Met a potential Riding Bud on the road today so a good portion of the ride was at a moderate conversational pace. Got after it for the last 45 minutes after we split up. Another splendid day for a ride.

Yesterday we were thwarted in hitting our intended destination so we tried again today. We made the trip and ended up with 62.5 mile to boot. But we had an inauspicious start. We started 8:10AM and managed to go all the way to Waltham Common, a distance of, um, about 1 mile when we had our first flat on the tandem. Of course it was a rear tire which must be patched without removing the wheel. However we found the leak, patched it, and continued on our way.

We made it out almost to I495, turned north into Harvard, Bolton, a bit of Boxborough, crossed under 495, ran south back to rt117, then back east.

Our return took us by Verrill Farm where we stopped for some lunch. Of course my sweetie just had to buy and take pics of veggies.

Our return also took us on the Minuteman Bikeway which as been known to harbor monsters this summer.

When we returned home I checked out the rear tire more carefully. I think the flat was the bike's way of telling us it should be retired. That's the second rear tire we've run through since I built up the bike.

Back in January 2013 another bf member, dddd IIRC though it may have been Golden Boy - I need to go through my old email - , had sent me a set of tires. I had just replaced the rear so I didn't need them right away. Today I mounted them and all is well. Also the FD I replaced yesterday worked like a charm. We be rollin'...

Addendum: One interesting thing about riding into parts unknown and seemingly isolated is the folks there may really be isolated. For example, we were Daisy, Daisy'ed by one woman out walking on some quiet country road. Ah, never seen a modern road tandem? Okay, so it's a C&V road tandem.

On our return's lunch stop we were approached by some guy in a bike jersey asking where we'd been. He told us he was part of a tandem team too and they'd noticed us there on our way out. Coincidentally we both stopped at Verrill Farm on our return at the same time. Had a nice conversation about the various roads around there.

It was a glorious day.

I hadn't ridden the Allez for 18 days, poor thing felt neglected. I love this bike. Pumped up the tires and got a late start. I kept forgetting things and had to return home (old-timers disease). The weather has cooled a little, long sleeves, but perfect for biking. 19.4 miles @15-18mph. It's a good day.

Not today but yesterday, solo 50 mile ride mixed hills and flats. Longest ride since I finished a few centuries many years ago. Metric century event in three weeks, almost ready.

25.8 miles @ 17.2 with 830 ft. Overcast skies held the temp down but the humidity was thick. Gave me 923.15 miles for the month. Highest monthly mileage total of the year so far.

Experienced my first pedal strike on pavement today. Felt like my knee was hit with a bat! Made a mental note not to do that again. 13 miles only.

I don't worry about pedal strikes on pavement but pedal strikes on tire are possible if I'm not paying attention.

(No miles today.)
