Retro cycling gloves.

Most of us in this forum probably remember when all cycling gloves had the crotchet backs. (not machine washable!) I've been looking for some of these, as I always found them to be comfortable on evening rides in the warm weather. I know Nashbar has some that they have sold for years, at a reasonable price. Planet Bike also makes a set. Any others out there? Any you like or dislike?

I'm asking this here, because I figure that "the kids" will probably not remember such gloves.

Rivendell often has them; my wife bought me a pair for Father's Day last year. Not sure if they're still in stock. www.rivbike.com

They are... bought a pair in early-June, and couldn't be happier with 'em! Just be ready for "Reptile Tan", if you're wearing 'em out in the sun

Walmart has Bell gloves that look like those, but made of synthetic materials. Less than $10/pair (I believe actual price is $6/pair, can't recall). They're comfortable (to me), and they should easily last through the summer/fall here in So Calif. I can also find the same thing at my local Sports Authority store, but they charge $10/pair.

. . . and they are machine washable (been wearing/washing them since the early '70s.

Anyone wearing crocheted-back gloves and using floppy discs is truly Retro!

Cleave 07-25-09 09:21 PM

Hi,

I generally get them from Performance when they are on sale. All of my non-racing cycling is with crochet-backed gloves.

LOL! Cool that you noticed.

Read the floppy disk's label... BIOS

Have you tried to upgrade the BIOS on a "retro" workstation or laptop, without using a floppy drive?

:crash:

I still have some data on 5.25" floppies.

I too like the the crotched gloves and I bought a pair of Bell gloves at a bike shop as soon as I saw them. In particular I like the "reptile tan" bcause it menas I'm getting a decent amount of week-end sunny-time riding in, outside of my usual early AM weekday commute. I consider it a badge of honor. :thumb:

Black and yellow crochet

Red and yellow with black palms

All black

Funny you should mention this as I've been looking at some recently to replace my "vintage" Performance ones. The white leather palm on mine is really grubby looking. Think I'll go with black this time.

I remember the Crocheted Spenco gloves. Those were the BEST gloves!! I mourn their passing. I haven't really been satisfied with anything since.

I got a new fangled pair with a spandex back for Fathers day. I kinda like them better than the crocheted back. Just keepin' up with the times.

alicestrong 07-27-09 08:00 AM

Spenco still makes them! Or did they change the design?

one_beatnik 07-27-09 09:17 AM

I have a pair of the Nashbar that I got this spring. They already of holes from the stitching cutting the fabric/fake leather. All the Nashbar ones I've gotten have only lasted me one season or less.

dave-j 07-27-09 11:10 AM

I also have the ones sold by Rivendell and they are by far the best gloves I own. Very padded, very tough (I machine wash mine all the time) and very comfy. Worth the cost of shipping which is almost as much as the gloves themselves.

az_cyclist 07-27-09 11:24 AM

I have not noticed the cotton crocheted gloves in the Performance catalog or in their stores this year. I did notice one pair in the Nashbar catalog.

Thanks to all! This is what I like about this forum.

So, lots of them are available.

I had a set. They were indeed great. Eventually, they did wear out and the "goop" started to leak a little. Too bad. There is no mention of them at all on Spenco's official website, so I would guess they exited the bicycle glove business. But, there still seem to be plenty of inventory in the channel.

In the 80's, I also owned a pair of Hatch crotched back cycling gloves. They were also pretty damn nice, and I eventually wore them out. This seems to be the same Hatch that makes gloves for police work, but they would appear to have also exited the cycling glove business.

I found this link to Amazon.

Hey check this out...

icyclist 07-28-09 12:35 PM

I too would love to own a pair Rapha gloves, but I have to draw the line somewhere (I own Specialized gloves).

Tom Bombadil 07-28-09 12:54 PM

I've seen the crochet-backed gloves in many cycling shops. Not hard to find at all. I own two pair.
