Solo fast ride

A while back someone posted a thread about his fast group ride with his best time ever. I enjoyed the thread and it got me to thinking what could I do (solo) in a fast ride? Went up to the Trail of the Coeur d' Alenes for my first effort at this. It's a flat trail in North Idaho that is lightly used during week days. I did the first 20 miles at an average speed of 20.1 mph trying to keep my speed above 20 mph, did the first 20 miles in just under one hour. The total ride was 40 miles and the average speed was 19.4 mph. ride time was about 2 hours 2 minutes. I would like to hear about your solo fast ride if you have done one. If not give one a try, it is fun!

Only rides I have ever gone out to go fast on were training rides for big rides I was doing.

I knew that when we could do the 30 miles in 150 minutes and do the 2,400 ft of climbing without falling off more than twice- Then we could do the 100 miles in 1 day and survive.

OK not solo but one single bike. The Offroad Tandem.

20 mph solo blows me away. I checked my records and my best is 19.4, but that only about 4 miles! Usually consider 17.5 a good night on anything over 20 miles.

You rock!

I think in the TDF they were averaging about 25 or 26. So I would say that's pretty impressive.

Best I ever did was 40 miles in 2 hours and 5 minutes, and that just about killed me. I typically average around 15 mph now.

Best was in June with a 20 mile ride with a 19.8 average.
99% of my rides are solo and I average 17.5 with around a 30-35 mile average ride. I did a 101 mile ride a month ago with a 16 mile average. I ride 5-7 days week.

I like the thought and am going to try a 20 mile average with at least a 20 mile ride before.......hmmm......sometime soon. LOL!

Last year I did a 73-mile charity ride in 3:37 (avg. 20.1). Good day, good temps, nearly flat route (~1500' climbing) -- a perfect setup for a new PR.

I've got a 16 mile, out and back route that I ride regularly. Slight uphill going, obviously a slight down hill returning. On a normal day it's a 1 hour ride, fastest I've ridden it was 52 minutes - about 18.1 mph. I've never attempted it as a time trial and gone flat out, but i'm guessing that 20 mph for an hour is just above my ability. I'm 58 and ride frequently, but I'm not training for anything.

I did 28 mph down a small hill here in central FL last week probably lasted for about 20/30 seconds, but I wasn't counting, however I was solo. Does that count??

My best solo ride was a 93 miler in 5 hours and 15 minutes of saddle time. That's about a 17.8 mph pace on suburban streets with traffic stops every few miles.

That was on 7/12/2009 and I've been getting slower ever since.

My best solo of reasonable distance was a 20 mile average of 18.6 mph. Did 18.4mph on a "Half Century" (actually 50.4mi) but that was last weeks club ride.

The one I'm really proud of was riding my age (61mi) with an average of 18.1mph back in May. Not a solo, however. I was visiting friends in Orlando and went out solo on a paved bike trail. After about 11 miles the trail ended and while I was looking for where it started again, I saw a group at a stop light. I asked if I could join, and they said "Yes. We're the A group. We ride at 23-25" I told them that was a little fast for me, but they encouraged me to hang on for as long as I could, and that the B group was not far behind. I stuck with them for about 20 miles, but when they went full speed into a 90 deg turn, I dropped and lost the wheel. I took a 10 min break, and joined the B group when they came by. Hung with them no problem for about 30 miles as I recall, but then they headed west when I needed to go east, so I bid adieu and turned on the GPS and set a course for "home" Made a small detour to get the 61mi. I was pooped!

In fla we don't have much climbing, so unless you have head winds (which we did encounter by the lake) it's pretty easy to keep a steady fast pace.

Here is a GPS file of a solo 59 mile training ride I did in June. I averaged 20.1 mph over 55+ miles then slowed down for the last 3 miles to cool down. Does it qualify for a 20+ mph ave. ride if I only count the first 96% of the ride? FYI, the big dips in the blue are when I needed to slow for an intersection or stop sign and my average HR for the ride was 130 BPM. The red HR line also shows a 1 hr Z3 interval (HR 137 -144) from around the 28 mile mark to the 49 mile mark.

I've been off my bike a lot this year due to work related necessities. I just started back preparing for next year and am riding my base miles right now. I rode Sunday 51 miles at 18.8 Solo while remaining totally aerobic. I was working to keep my heart rate under 150, averaged 140. First 25 miles were at 19.2, second were obviously slower. I did this at a rails to trails SUP in Northwest Atlanta called the Comet Trail. My goal by the end of the year is to do 50-80 miles totally aerobically at 20. I only need 1.2 mph to get there.

As soon as I get my base back, I will blast one out and see what my best solo fast ride can be.

BTW, Congrats on a great ride, and good post idea.

When you say flat you mean flat!
Well done too. 19 mile avg over a hundred miles....impressive to me!

I'll count it, good job.
I really need to look at these graphs a bit more to understand all they are saying.

Forgot to say that I did 29 miles today with a 18.6 average. I had help with the wind for a chage today too.I think getting the 19 or 20 mile avg is going to be some work for me. If I really try I think I could but for what? To post here? Yeah that's the ticket ...to post here. I am going to get it done first the 19.
I dont race and have no plans to, I ride solo 99% of the time and just ride to impress myself ( have fun doing it), which I have so far!
