Katy Trail - Day 1

We started in Clinton, MO today and ended in Sedalia at the Tour of Missouri time trials. This section of the trail is away from the Missouri River and the scenery consists of lots of open fields, wildlife and small towns. The trail was in excellent condition with only a few soft spots in a couple of the shady areas. I imagine this is from the rain they received before we arrived. The only wildlife we saw were squirrels and a small turtle I almost ran over

As you can see the weather was fantastic. The temps were in the low 80's but we did pickup a little headwind in the early afternoon. This section of the trail has quite a bit of 1-2% grades and also contains the highest point on the entire trail. We should reach the Missouri River at the end of tomorrow's ride and the books say it flattens out from that point with great scenery along the river.

The 520 resting on the trail.

There was a lot of open spaces the last few miles into Sedalia.

Reminders of days past.

Beverly, this looks great. Are there many other bicyclers/hikers?

We saw less than a dozen riders on the trail all day. Of course the Tour of Missouri was going on in this area. We saw many cyclists at the time trials on their bikes.

We did pass one group of about seven on the trail that looked like it might have been a club ride. The crushed limestone surface didn't seem to keep their speed down too much.

We talked to a couple at breakfast yesterday that was doing a cross country tour from east to west. They had just come off the Katy and were trying to get back on their regular route.

Nice pictures, Beverly. I especially like the first one with the trees.

So, how often are you stopping to take pictures?

So when are you scheduled to reach St Charles?

I'm going to be off next week because I still can't work. Can't bicycle either for that matter, but maybe we could do lunch or something.

Yes, we're staying in hotels. The wife of one of the riders has been sagging for us and it's been great

Not as many pictures as the Colorado trip but the camera is seeing quite a bit of use

We'll be riding into St. Charles Wednesday and then leaving for home. I'm sure we'll be doing lunch there and I would love to meet for lunch if possible. Let me know and I'll PM you with my cell number.

I was born and raised in St. Louis, so I rode the Katy quite a lot. Even went to Jefferson city to help support / lobby for it when it still just an idea.

When my kids were little it was a great place to take them and their friends, i.e. easy cycling and very safe. Not a lot of fun for me since I'm addicted to climbing and descending, but overall a great place for most (less addicted than me) riders.

Plus, lots of climbing and descending on Hwy 94 which is not too far from the Katy, at least closer to St. Louis and through Bluffton, Rhineland, Herman, etc.
