Denver your posts are generally excellent, but this one suffers from a fatal topo.

Shouldn't this be "First Stinking Snow"?

The topo is quite good, but perhaps a typo?

Bring it on!

I have to go to the ski shop and drop off my daughters boots to get the bindings on her new skis mounted - she joins the race team this season

It was 92 here today, and it's supposed to be in the low 90s for the next few days. I'd really appreciate a little bit of cool air. It feels like July around here.

I'm blowing east real hard.

Supposed to set a record low tonight for this date - 22F.

I hope it snows here in Chattanooga this year. Fat tire and snow rock. Just for the info, if it's freezing and below out and you want to ride, put the bike outside for an hour before you ride and the tires will get cold enough that they don't melt anything they touch and won't slide. 'Not foolproof, but I've been doing it since I was a kid. Simple science. Disc brakes will disallow the heat to travel to the tires from friction. I love riding in the snow.

I'm west of Glacier National Park and we had measurable snow overnight. An arctic cold front is to be parked over us all weekend. We're to drop down to 5F tonight; windchill tomorrow will be brutal with steady winds about 15 MPH gusting to 22 MPH. I don't plan to be outdoors much tomorrow. This year I'm adding shrink wrap film to most of my windows even though they're dual panes; I'll tackle that project tomorrow. I don't like getting snow this early.

This is why they really call it global climate change, not global warming.

...and what's with this walking stuff?

btw, this came on so suddenly, didn't get my sprinklers blown out...crap!

We had a couple of days warning in the extended forecast prepared by the National Weather Service so I got my outside water turned off. I live in a valley with a reputation for milder winters, but the last 3 have been terrible--lots of snow and colder temps (last winter broke a 50-year record for coldest temperatures). This early blast of winter is not a good omen. I had to climb up on the roof twice last year to clear snow, I was really hoping for a break this year. I really hate sub-zero wind chills, which we're to have through tomorrow.

From what I have been reading, the global "climate change" caused by humankind has been trumped by a very marked decrease in sunspots, which has a significant effect on climate (think the several ice ages of varying degrees we have had in past 10,000 years)

Quite controversial, I will admit, with evidence on both sides. But, anyway:

Does the fact that there are things we can't control mean we shouldn't strive to control those that we can?

Seems to me you are adding a value judgment to what was supposed to be a statement of fact?? I have implied nothing about control or not control, at least I don't think so!

BTW

https://www.abc.net.au/science/articl...08/2538378.htm

According to NASA's Space Weather website the sun is in the middle of a solar minimum, with 266 sunspot-free days last year - the lowest for nearly a century.

In 2009, the sun has been blemish-free for more than 80 days, putting it on track for an even quieter year

Get rid of that snow Denver! I got my bike fixed and am anxious to get in some miles.

Oh yes, there is a BIG storm in the Pacific that is blowing warm air north. We expect to set a new record high temperature today. Hope it snows again before it gets too cold, or the plumbing will freeze.

Ask a simple question, get a lecture.

No judgment. The question just seemed to naturally follow the statement.

from your quoted article:
"While the link seems to be supported by other geological evidence, Oughton says that it is only speculation.
He says no mechanism has been found which would prove a connection between minimal sunspot activity and cooler temperatures. "

Strange weather stuff is happenin' all over the globe.
Too hot/cold/dry/rainy/windy/sunny/cloudy and . . . snow before Halloween.
Down to the mid-80s here; yup, fall has arrived!
