I'm getting less cycling goal oriented which I think I'm okay with. As such I have not given it much thought but here goes-some of these are going to be much harder to pull off than others, but you have to stretch yourself:

Get PAlt out to the TT's at _________ Motor Speedway (awaiting on the official name for 2010)
Have a successful TT series for the participants and the Association in 2010
Do some new centuries that I have not done before
Avoid buying any new bike gear until my other bike and gear are disposed of
Average over 20 mph on a century and a metric century
Is this the year to ride the BRP/Skyline end to end??
Get at least one person interested in cycling
SAG for my nephew and his wife at the Wisconsin Ironman in September

Here is an idea to check off a couple of goals. https://megamonster.lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2010/

This is a 100 mile Time Trial - no drafting. A couple of guys did it 20 mph + and a couple of 55+ men did it 18 +. Check out the 2008 results. My wife and I are thinking about doing this on the tandem but the 100K version.

First time posting, but had to put my goals out there to push myself this year. Last year was my first year riding, and at 56 years old it opened up a whole new world! I lost 36 pounds and it wasn't even a goal ( maybe I should stop here and think a minute before I list this year's goals?), road in my first century at 6 hours and 15 minutes, did the bike leg of a triathlon relay, and logged in just over 7,000 miles. This year I want to;
1. Complete a minimum of three Centuries and get at least one of them in under 5 hours
2. Complete Robert Kahler's 9 week "Torture Clinic" Training Program (already signed up)
3. Complete the "Breathless Agony" ride to Big Bear in May
4. Log 7800 miles (150 a week average)
5. Create and complete a ride from my cabin in Big Sky Montana to West Yellowstone/ to Old Faithful/to Jackson Lake/to Jackson Hole over a four day road trip through Yellowstone and Teton National Parks (about 180 miles)
6. and finally, Still be married to my wonderful wife and recognize my seven children!

I took an early out and retired on Jan 1st of this year. Sadly, my cycling mileage went down. Lost 4 club members in 4 years due to car/bike accidents. In July of this year, while driving to the start of a club ride, I came upon a member who had been hit by an intern who had worked 24 hours and fell asleep and crossed the road and hit my friend . He had to have extensive facial surgery ( I can testify to his facial features left on the pavement, nose and lips) I waited until the chopper took him to University of Michigan hospital until leaving. He is now in a rehab center for brain injuries. I have been on the bicycle since then, in fact I cycled on Shoreline West and Cycle North Carolina. My overall mileage is down, but..... I did purchase maps for the Southern Tier for this spring. Hope I can get the "LOVE" of cycling back.

Again, from Road Bike Rider email newsletter, very good way to look at things:

Made your New Year's resolutions yet? Didn't think so. Feel free to cut and paste some of mine:

I resolve . . . .

---not to begrudge riders who have gotten faster than me. I will smile and say "Great job!" as they drop me on hills. I will not spread rumors about going to a party at their home and seeing used syringes and testosterone patches in the trash.

---not to spend so much money on bike parts. I will not tell my partner that by buying cycling equipment I am helping end worldwide recession. On family shopping trips, I will not point out that our kids already have shoes that more or less fit whereas I do not have ceramic-bearing derailleur pulleys.

---not to get upset when the numbers from my power meter/heart monitor/cyclecomputer/feeble brain are not what I think they should be. I will not make up excuses, like, "If it wasn't so cold, my output would've been 10 watts higher." Or, "I coulda gone 30 seconds faster if I had some ceramic-bearing derailleur pulleys, which cost less than a pair of kids' sneakers."

---not to talk incessantly about cycling with non-cyclists. When Great Aunt Hortense says this year's holiday turkey was even moister than last year's, I will not reply, "Speaking of this year, can you believe Lance finished third in the Tour?"

---not to get stressed when I miss a ride. I will not pout. I will rejoice in the opportunity to complete home-improvement projects, attend ballet performances and/or Monster Truck rallies, and drive children to their sporting events or music classes in far-off locales.

---not to be so rigid about things. Like New Year's resolutions.

Hi Kevin,

I've never done the Torture Clinic just because it's so much money (yeah, I'm cheap), but I have done Breathless Agony four times and it's an excellent ride, very well supported. Plus (big plus) you have the Grim Reaper cheering you on.

I'm going to try to get an under 7 hour time (just over last year), but yes, it's a very well organized event!

Hey Rick, re: the cost of the Torture Clinic: my employees bought it for me as a gift after learning that I was encouraged by a friend of mine to complete it with him this year. I know it's like paying for boot camp for riders, but I've never worked out in that environment for cycling before, and I think it'll help me to improve my conditioning with a couple of friends, while learning some new indoor equipment and getting the equivalent of some extra miles in during these winter months when daylight ride time is short. I'll be looking for you at the start of the Breathless Agony this coming year, it'll probably be the last glimpse of you I'll see that day! Nice goal of 7 hours, I've heard many riders proud of 9 and 10 hours in the saddle, as long as they finish!

KD

Hi,

Hope I'm not too late to the party.

Yeah, I know, you all think I'm crazy (except Dante who does these rides too) but as loyal readers know, I will fill you in as the season progresses in my long reports with far too much detail.

Rick / OCRR
Rick, sorry that I didn't see you out on the road this year, but yes, you are crazy. I have zero interest in double centuries.

Hermes, it looks like we are working on a couple of common goals during 2010. Stay healthy and fun are kind of basic tenets for me though.

Red, that typically goes without saying for me each year but not sure if I can race more than the 58 races that I did this year.

Only one way to find out I guess.
BikeWNC, riding cross country has always been a dream that I have not been able to articulate as a goal. I want to hear how you had a great time doing it.

OK, so here are my 2010 goals as posted in the 33 (Road Bike Racing sub forum).

My goals are pretty much perennial these days as I have not been able to achieve them in prior years.
  1. Finish a 40K ITT in under 1 hour: Been close over the years but no cigar.
  2. Get back under 150 lbs: Got really close last season but doing my best right now to make the goal difficult.
  3. Finish with the main pack in a hilly road race (see Goal #2): Hilly road races used to be my strength.
  4. (New) Get into a winning break in a weekend Masters 50+ race: I can do it on Tuesday nights and I was close last season.

I know that they are modest but I am an old guy who races for fun and fitness.

My goals for 2010? To ride more, and to meet an incredibly beautiful, single female cyclist, in my own age group. Come to think of it, that was my goal for 2009. What can I say, I'm pretty dull.
