My Cycling Buddy Lost His Wife
Tough year for my Cycling Buddy. Hit by a car a year+ ago and is still using a cane to walk. Still cannot ride his bike. His wife died late Saturday night from a chronic illness.
His wife was in Hospice for the last couple weeks due to advanced stages of COPD. She slipped away Saturday night. He had hoped that she could make it through Valentines and to her next birthday which was 2/18 but she just didn't have the strength. He had even decorated her room with everything Valentine.
By all accounts the people and services of Hospice were more than he could have ever expected. He now sees that the last couple weeks he was able to spend with his wife were a very special gift, as they got to say their goodbyes and enjoy each others company just a little bit longer.
I sure wish he was able to ride his bike and do some of the things he really loves to do as I know that would help him to cope-but that's just not going to happen as he still has severe lingering effects in his left leg. His life has changed so dramatically in a relatively short period of time.
My Buddy has been a model of how to handle, manage, internalize and cope with losing someone so close. I've learned so much just listening, observing and being around.
My Cycling Buddy would tell you to hug and tell your loved ones that you love them. You cannot do that enough.

And as you said, getting to say goodbyes is a special gift. As I re-read your post it occurs to me that you are also lucky to have a friend like him. While life can be unbelievably hard, it also has it glories. I'm reminded that the scent of a rose is fleeting, but the memory of the scent can last a lifetime. I hope you and your friend have glorious memories to last a life time, and that the opportunity for more such moments presents itself.

Damn, and right around Valentine's Day, to boot. Please forward the best wishes of your friends at 50+ and recognize our shared appreciation of your value as a friend.

Sad to hear this.
I will say a prayer for him.
He is right too about saying how you feel to family and friends, you just never know.
