magnesium

Put a pair of these Nashbar magnesium spd-style pedals on the V3 last night and rode 10 miles on them today. They seem fine. Attractively priced.
Never had a magnesium anything before except maybe milk of magnesia.

I was thinking the same thing. If he bottoms out and scrapes the pedal on a tight turn the flame out may be spectacular.

If that happens, I'll be sure to post pics and video.

Magnesium corrodes very badly with the salt they put on the roads in winter.

The last time I had magnesium was in college. Some bad judgement, a lighter, magnesium wire, toliet stall in the dorm, a guy we always picked on, you get the drift... = Social Probation for 2 yrs.

Now days, would probably end up in a Homeland Security concentration camp in some central american jungle country.

This is from Wikipedia:
"Magnesium ion's high solubility in water helps ensure that it is the third most abundant element dissolved in seawater."
Another wiki entry:
"The free element (metal) is not found naturally on Earth, as it is highly reactive (though once produced, is coated in a thin layer of oxide, which partly masks this reactivity). The free metal burns with a characteristic brilliant white light, making it a useful ingredient in flares."

Something to consider:
1. Don't ride in the rain and stay out of the ocean.
2. Don't ride too fast or the pedals may ignite.

One of the guys at the shop I used to work at bought a magnesium frame on ebay and we would always kid him about the frame catching fire.

Mercedes-Benz used to make their race car body-frames from magnesium. It just took one bad accident in France to get them to stop that!

In a race car crash the most dangerous things are the fuel and flying debris. Race car fuel tanks are designed using fuel absorbing materials, so that fuel doesn't get sprayed everywhere if a tank is ruptured, and tracks now use high fencing between cars and spectators so that in a crash such as the one in the video, you don't have flying car pieces turned into shrapnel. Not sure if that crash was the one that sparked some of those changes or not. Now the most common material in race cars is the same one used in racing bicycle frames: carbon fibre reinforced plastic often shortened to carbon fibre or CF.

I guess if you do get those pedals to ignite it will give a whole new meaning to the phrase

The '55 Mercedes Crash was (tragically) historic -- I never knew the frame was magnesium.

That '55 crash got a lot of press again when a Mercedes car "took flight" during warm-up for the '99 race:

True BengeBoy,

But by the time of the flying Mercedes they were mostly carbon fiber. Plus, this time around the driver survived!
