OK think about this... how many of us "oldsters" had mom at home when we were growing up?
Preschool is a phenomena of dual income households, where both husband and wife have to work to make ends meet.
I am 53 and my mother raised all of us, then went off to work just for some spending money. I dare say that there are probably a lot more working mothers out there today.

I went to kindergarten some 65 years ago. It was in Connecticut. I don''t remember much about it. I have read that preschool does help kids get ready for school and it supposedly improves performance. I would imagine a lot depends on the intellectual stimulation at home as to how beneficial it might be. Some homes are wastelands.

In the mid-50's I went to nursery school run by a local college at age 3, and then half-day 4 year old kindergarten and full day 5 year old kindergarten at the university lab school in central Missouri. Both parents were teaching, mom only part time.

Many a day I would fake an illness so I could stay at home and listen to the Arthur Godfrey show. Art Linkletter was also really cool.

Frankly I do not think that in my area there were preschools around back then [49, 50], at least I never heard of anyone where I was from who went to one.

I went to Mrs. Drown's preschool in Newton MA in 1949/50. My only memory of it was a jumping board that I fell off of and split my lip. I think it was mostly for my mom, who was tending to my 2-yr old sister, and newborn twin brothers at the time.

About pre-school (remember the OP question) I didn't, but would have liked to. I think young kids have an innate thirst for learning and for play--it is probably hard-wired into us. What is not innate is a thirst for TV*, but it seems that kids (and adults) have certainly been trained in the "magic of television" in the past few generations. So now we have to "teach" kids the joy of learning and the joy of play.

I'm 52, almost 53. Started kindergarden in '62 in West Virginia but was already reading the paper to mom and dad in the evenings. No "preschool" around then. That was just a small part of what mom did.

I went to kindergarten in 1947 at St John's School in Des Moines. My kindergarten teacher's name was Sister Mary St. Leo. She might have been older than all of us students put together and there were 20 or 30 of us. I remember she had a flip chart with the numbers from one to ten along with the appropriate number of flowers on each page.
Today kids have to know all the things that I learned in kindergarten before they can get into kindergarten.

Well, I'm 57 (OK, that's tomorrow but close enough) and we also had something called nursery school here. I think it was supposed to teach us socialization (as opposed to socialism so none of that, ok?). I went 2 or 3 days a week as I recall. One day I was pissed because I couldn't play in the wooden car (with a REAL steering wheel) so, I opened the side gate and started walking along the highway toward home. Just had enough, I guess. I didn't make it very far before the came and found me

Oh, I was preschooled ... I got my ass kicked by my older siblings.
I'd tell you how old I am, but I'm trying to forget.
