The View From My Saddle....June 2010

Here’s a brief summary of the view from my saddle over the past few weeks…..

June was a very busy month…unfortunately not cycling busy. Each weekend my bride and I were blessed with a visit from a different daughter, one per week, each week for three consecutive weeks. Some things take precedence over riding and family falls into that category I guess.

June 26th was a big day on my calendar. It was the date of the Rochester Area Recumbent Enthusiasts annual rally. The rally consists of an 80+ mile tour of upstate NY including lunch in The City of Rochester. This year it was quite overcast and a bit cool, if you consider the upper 60’s cool. It was threatening rain right from the 08:00 a.m. start but since there is only one R.A.R.E R2K rally per year these hardy riders weren’t about to be deterred.

Here’s the pre-ride lineup out at Hamlin Beach…

The route meanders through several rural towns always within just a few miles of the Lake Ontario shore. The roads are always quiet and peaceful and old friends and acquaintances as well as newcomers spend a good part of the ride enjoying each others company and conversation.

This pic was snapped just a few miles from the start….

After a stop at Charlotte Beach Park to meet up with the folks doing the abbreviated tour route the group heads south along the Genesee River to downtown Rochester and a delicious meal at the bustling Dinosaur BBQ. The restaurant is situated in the heart of the city on the banks of the Genesee in an old train station.

As you can see, the rain did arrive in time for lunch….

With our bellies full we climbed back on board our machines and continued the journey along the Genesee to the Erie (Barge) Canal. The route then turns west and follows the canal into Greece and then we turn away from the canal and head north back to the lakeshore communities and then finally west for the final leg back to Hamlin Beach.

Here a large group of riders are taking a break in North Greece, N.Y. Business was good at that conveinience store that day!!

We all got wet on the outside, but the rain couldn’t dampen our spirits on the inside.

Cool.... looks like a fun group. I ride 95% alone but really enjoy a group outing sometimes.

Lenny,

Looks like a fun group though I did notice a few non-recumbents in the group, it's good to know that the group is not too exclusive.
Dino BBQ - never pass up an opportunity for that. Can't wait until they finally open up one on my side of the state - it's been in the works for over a year.
