first 50 miler in a decade
Last year I hit 278 lb. I got back on my bike and have dropped 60lb. Today I did 50 miles which is a new distance record. It's nothing compared to my younger days (I'm 59) but I'll take what I can get. That's all. Just wanted to say it "outloud".

50 miles is an achievement for any newcomer. I know that when I started riding age 40- it took me over a year to reach that milemark and I was younger- lighter and probably fitter than you
So well done on the distance but you have left yourself opem now to the next milestone. Riding your age and the metric century. Should be a doddle but you are running out of good weather for this year so get them in quick.

Well you dropped quite a few pounds. Good for you. You got into decent shape too. Congratulations on your 50 miler.

It IS fun to "take control". A week never goes by without me realizing I'm doing something I couldn't have done last year. This AM I checked my resting pulse as I awoke and it's down to 48. That's a big deal for me too and not bad at 59. Winter has me worried but I'm just going to have to work harder at Winter riding (tough at -40F) and going to the gym.

Good job. I hope to do the same thing, but at age 56. When I was in my 20s I rode all the time, and a typical weekend breakfast ride with the club would be 35 fast miles minimum. Life intervened since then, and while my wife and I did a couple of metrics in our 30s, the last 15 years or so cycling completely fell off our maps. We're just recently getting back into it (me, sporadically over the past 4 or 5 years; her just a month ago). So I can appreciate your accomplishments. I felt good about our getting out and doing a 26 mile group ride yesterday, until I read your post.

And here's to everyone who gains a few years and works at getting back at it. Interestingly, in the past I didn't really -need- to work at it. I didn't cycle competitively at all. I just rode. Commuted, rode, toured. Touring up here in Alaska is camping and riding for a week with no towns or food to buy (to speak of) in between. No stealth is needed because there's nobody around once you leave the road. I'm looking forward to that again.
We'll see if the weather holds...I'm planning on riding in Denali Park to Polychrome Pass in two weeks. In and out for a long day ride, but only if the weather is good because I'm not taking Winter camping/emergency gear with me.
