Strange Sight - Mystery

Yesterday was spectacular in terms of biking weather...warm, clear, no wind. So, I hit the trail along the Schuylkill River for a 40 mile ride. Much to my surprise, in the first mile I saw four riders all in the same jerseys with each wearing a backpack with a floor pump in it. I thought this was very strange. Within the next four miles I saw two other groups of riders (each group wearing jerseys that were the same) with backpacks and floor pumps jutting out of them. Within the next 6 to 8 miles I figured out there was an FOP Police Survivors Benefit ride taking place. What I can't figure out is why so many of them were carrying floor pumps in backpacks. By the end of the ride I had counted 37 riders with a floor pump on their back. Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe a sponsor was giving them away at the beginning of the ride? If so, they should have left them there and picked up on their return

Maybe the rules said to bring a pump, and they were neophytes who hadn't a clue about other types of bicycle pumps?

Maybe they were having to keep each other pumped up about the cause for which they were riding.

This appears to be an annual migration of some strange biped species. You needed to trap and tag one of them and then release it...

I saw one guy with a floor pump on a century, but only one.

Maybe you had a recurring DejaVu day. That is just weird. Maybe a LBS has a great deal on floor pumps.

Some sot of team event where rules forbid getting help from a teammate and (maybe) team score is slowest team rider? Just a guess... where are the fiction writers among us?

Those aren't floor pumps they are soul suckers, after they crush someone's soul, they suck it up with the SSD (Soul Sucking Device). At the end of the ride they count the number of riders in "full team kit" they blew by vs. the # of souls they own.
