I think grey/silver/white hair on a man is nice, however, if it would make you feel better to color it, do so!
I would recommend going to a salon, at least the first couple of times, to get the right color. Any harsh color looks bizarre. If you go for it, make sure you keep the back of your neck trimmed or it looks bad if that part is grey.
I will tell you, it's a pain to keep up the coloring, not that I would know anything about it!

48 and just happy to still have hair compared to old friends from highschool. I have a little itty bitty bit of silver coming in but not enough to notice. I'll never color my hair. Like Historian says, you aint fooling nobody. If you think you are, then better have your eyes checked too!
FTR, I don't need or wear glasses other than sunglasses.

Not that I totally live to talk about hair or anything, but...
There is a correlation between the changing color of one's hair and one's complexion. Skin color softens as we age and goes better with greying hair. That's why you often get that "shock" of contrast and know when someone has hit the (dye) bottle a little too hard.
For guys, I think there are basically two ways to go if you want to color. Either go to the salon and get subtle highlights from a pro, or punk out and get an obvious dye job - think Billie Joe Armstrong - and rock your new fashion statement.

Yeah, I use some darkening agent, Touch of Gray to take some of the silver out, but I'm realistic. I leave some gray in. I'm really lucky, I have a complete, thick head of hair. I don't think any of it has thinned out.

If I made my hair dark again, would that make me ride faster?
Never mind...........I wasn't any faster when I was younger.

You gave me an opportunity to spout off again; thanks.
The world is a competitive place. I have seen the effect that improving the package has on one's ability to be successful in that competition. At the same time I know people who once they were out of the work force, or who got to be The Boss immediately stopped the hair color but continued with the rest of the package.
It is an unfortunate fact that when dealing with other people often you never get a chance to demonstrate competence if the personal presentation is not up to snuff. At the same time a nice wrapper is just that, a wrapper. If there isn't anything inside you soon are out the door and down the street; maybe with a black mark that really hurts your future.

I turn 56 this month and don't color. I have a fair amount of gray hair but still plenty of dark brown left (photo below was taken earlier this year).

Pay no attention to these fossils... Siu Blue Wind excepted.
I colored my hair for about 7 years - not the beard. I find that I am shaving more surface area and higher as I get older and elite cyclists shave their legs.
I went to Cristoph's Salon in Washington DC and later the one in Beverly Hills, CA. I used the colorist that did a number of the politicians.
Coloring men's hair is a lot more tricky than women's due to the fact that men do not want anyone to know that they do it. Read comments above.
I started by having her take out some of the grey but leaving a little in. Then I had the whole head done. I takes off several years of age which can be a competitive advantage in business.
The challenge is keeping it up. Grey hair grows out and the color usually turns slightly orange over time. Arnold Schwarzenegger colors his hair and on occasion has that peculiar Arnold orange that the media sometimes reports.
Forget about doing it yourself unless you want to look like the guy you mentioned in your post. Find the best colorist that has a track record coloring men's hair and then pay whatever the going rate is.
I stopped doing it about 5 years ago mainly due to the time involved and expense. I think about it on occasion but do not want to incur the added cost and time at the salon. Although hanging out at Cristophe's Beverly Hills with the starlets was inspiring. But one never knows when I may do it again.

I keep my hair cut in a buzz cut but it is nearly white when it grows out. I'm 57 and coloring my hair would not fool anyone, especially since I'm lazy about shaving more than 2 or 3 times a week. I've had 30 something ladies actually touch my hair and compliment how nice it feels and looks which is kind of fun. Besides my wife likes it and she is the only one I have to please. Where were those 30 something ladies when I was in my 30's they weren't touching my hair and complimenting me on how nice it felt that's for sure.

A friend's son was assumed to be her husband because his beard made him look much older.
Shave the beard.
Go to a good pro. Tried it once with the woman who cut my hair. Did not like having magenta hair.

Generally didn't. Had salt n pepper from 30's on, plus a shift from black to brown.
Then I was laid off day before my 50th birthday, and in the job market which we know/suspect has a youthful bias. That's when started using Just For Men Touch of Gray. Evolved into a job where went around the country giving seminars where gray hair was an asset - suggesting learned experience, so let it go natural. Laid off again, adopted the youthful appearance again - but also got tired of "working for the man" now self-employed and back natural.

Here are a couple of guys some may recognize that are one year older than me.
Governor Arnold
Al Gore 1994
Al Gore 2000 Presidential Campaign
Here is a recent pic of Al Gore. Now he needs the natural look to convince people of global warming.
Now do these guys color their hair?

That is why I like "Touch of Gray". While it darkens the base, it keeps a nice blend. Others, like in the pics above, are uniform throughout - which is not natural and stands out as being colored.

As McKinley Morganfield (aka Muddy Waters) sang Willie Dixon's words so eloquently in "Young-Fashioned Ways",
There may be snow up on the mountain, but there's a thaw down under the hill.
