Hi Ray. Welcome to the friendliest place on the net. Do you still have the bike in the 1973 picture?

Thanks for the welcome Dan. No, the Peugeot has been lost to time. When I purchased the Trek I asked the wife who could not remember what happen to it either. Lost in a move I suppose.

Well, this is the 50+ forum ya know. If you just forgot where you left it it's ok, we'll understand.

As a recent inductee to the 50+ group, all of my teen years were in the 70's.

Me with my first road bike in about '75. Notice how it was feather light.

It was a Raleigh Record that I bought new for $130 from Classic Cyclery in Hanover Park IL. (they gave me $65 for my absolutely mint Schwinn Stingray 5 speed)

I installed ratchet shifters on the down tube, and replaced the 27 x 1 1/4 inch tires with 27 x 1's.

My buddy and I hung out at Classic Cyclery and I landed myself a job as a mechanic for the summer of '77. I was paid $2 an hour cash. Bret Day was the manager (say hi if you're out there Bret!) and was trying to sell his car for $900. I managed to save up $600, and begged him every day to sell it to me. After several weeks of no better offers he finally said yes! I became the proud owner of a '67 Fastback Mustang with a 289 V-8, 3 speed on the floor, dual exhaust with glass packed mufflers and mag wheels. I was still in high school and boy was I cool!

So I got my first road bike and my first car from the same bike shop!

I was only a teenager until 1974. I graduated from banana-seat bikes to a 10-speed when I got to high school in 1968. It was a metallic green Varsity that had to weigh a ton, but the gearing and the higher-pressure and narrower tires made it infinitely easier to propel than the old bikes.

Sold that when I was still in high school and was bikeless until my junior year of college (1975) when I bought a Motobecane Mirage (the Raleigh Grand Prix was the real popular bike at the time, and I wanted something different). I honestly don't remember how or when I parted ways with it, but a couple of years after graduation I got a Sekai 2000 that served me well for a few years, when I replaced it with a 1984 Gitane Tour de France. I had that bike, complete with its rather odd Ofmega components, until about 3 years ago when I sold it. Around 1990 I joined the index shifting revolution with a Trek 1500 aluminum, and that's still my only road bike, though it needs to be replaced badly. It was borderline too big for me when I got it, and now that I'm shorter (!) it's definitely too big.
