Non-Australians may be unfamiliar with the Australian magpie (Gymnorhyna tibicen) - a charming and intelligent creature except in the nesting season, when it can turn truly ferocious. The Macquarie Dictionary describes it as having 'a solid body, strong legs and a large pointed bill' - it could have added that the bill is made of stainless steel. In spring it's the bane of cyclists and pedestrians, and can open up your scalp or even take out an eye.

Now research shows that there's a splendid cure for magpie attack. Just get old.

A surplus cabbage patch kevlar military helmet might be the ticket for that evil sounding bird.

I've also found that to be true, but in the (perhaps dated) British colloquial usage of the term "bird".

The video explains why the red-wing black birds attack me with or without a helmet. I'm buying a wig for next spring.
