Looks like the first weekend in April for us. Pie is in Santa Ysabel after the climb up Montezuma Grade from the desert floor in Anza Borrego, and after the long descent after Ranchita.

Well, I'm guessing that for me, it will have to be a week from Friday. That'll be the Congressional Bike Ride at the National Bike Summit. I don't think there will be pie on the ride, but I'm willing to bet that pie can be found in D.C. afterwards.

Yup, I can't think of a better place for a pie ride than Julian. That town is all about pie.

Oh, dang! I thought it was today. I finished a nice 12 mile shakedown ride of a new build then switched to my regular road bike and took a leisurely 30 mile ride - all of it in the relatively warm sunshine. I'm currently looking at a slice of key lime pie sitting next to my Golden Monkey Ale.

Yes indeed, the weather is starting to become more Springish!

I managed a little 25 miler today, my first pedaling experience since Jan 18th!! The temperature was flirting with 30* and the wind was a gentle 9mph out of the WSW.

Check this out, some grass is actually showing through the snowpack!! That's the first grass I've seen in well over six or seven weeks! Of course the water is still a little stiff. Just moments earlier four white tail deer lept through this spot but, um, I err aah, didn't manage to get a picture of them.





It's still a bit early for a swim.....



...and the Merry-Go-Round is still closed....



...but the ice fishing is still going strong!!!




The forecast for tomorrow is cold & windy with frequent snow squalls. Oh well, that's Spring time weather for you.

Pie....no, I had a big plate of Goulash and for desert a bowl of Vanilla Frozen Custard.

I did 34 miles today. It was sunny and warm (63F, 17C). When I got home there a piece of chocolate cake on the kitchen counter. I won't be picky and demand pie.

Hmmm . . .

I went to 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grade in Julian. I was the valedictorian - or whatever it was called - for my 8th grade graduating class - all 8 of us. At our graduation to high school, I played the accordion - Lady in Spain, of course - and my sister accompanied on the violin. Only had to restart the song 3 times!!

I used to work as a summer camp counselor on Mt Palomar with the daughter of the starters and then owners of the Santa Ysabel bread/pie store - the Dudleys???, as I recall??? - is it still there?

Kids came to Julian Hign from Warners, Cuyamaca, Borrego and further out in the desert - some rode 2 hours one way. We were lucky - only a 15 mile ride, 6 by private car and 9 by bus.

Well, enough of that stuff!!

Spring flies by pretty fast there in Mesa/Tempe/Scottsdale/Phoenix. First thing you know, it'll be 130 in the shade.

Hee hee. If we ever had that much frozen stuff on the ground in Eugene the city would close down. Come to think of it, several years back we did have a bit of an ice-over and they did close the city down.

My youngest daughter went back East to college and had never seen snow fall, ever. Heck she'd never owned a real winter coat. The first time it snowed she ran out and danced around in it like a little kid. The funniest story she tells is that they all said, "Lets make snow angels!" She didn't know how to do it and planted herself face first in the snow. Her college friends are still laughing about that.

It just can't be this week. We have a SMALL party going on here in New Orleans, or at least until tuesday night.

Last summer I would leave between 3 and 4 AM to get in a 70 to 85 mile ride before it got over 110. It's not much fun ridding if it's over that.
