OT: How do you hold a Kensington?
In a letter written in 1920 my grandfather mentions "a Kensington". Using Google's Ngram Viewer that acts like a search engine for google books, I discovered that it appears to be some kind of charity event or fund raiser, popular apparently mostly in 1920. But more than that, I can't find out.
Anyone ever hear their parents and grandparents mention having a Kensington and have any idea of what went on in one?
Thanks.

saw this but not sure it helps too much. Sems to say the same thing you did, a charity event of some sort.

I have to hold my Kensington with both hands.
Sorry. I really am.
Seriously, I don't think I've ever heard of them before.

It seems to be a hideously obscure term. I guess I need to ask on the 100+ forum.

There is a neighborhood in San Diego called "Kensington" that Digital Gee frequently bicycles through, and I, in my younger years, used to frequent also - I even did some lawn mowing there.
Perhaps we could ask DG to ask folks as he rides his bike through that neighborhood?
"Hey, how do you hold your Kensington?"
This makes this thread officially bicycle related.

It's probably the closest Kensington to where my Grandfather was the night in 1920 he described "a Kensington", which was in Mazatlan.

I've heard of a 'Madison' but not a 'Kensington.'

Probably arising from cycling events held in Kensington, near London in the 1800's. See article in NY Times from 1874. https://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive...8AD95F408784F9
Also, another article in the Times from the 1890's refers to Kensington as a brand of bicycle.
Or even related to the Kensington Oval in Adelaide, AU. It was built in 1875, and a local cycling club first met there in 1884. https://www.norwoodcc.on.net/about_us.html
The Kensington Oval is a cricket venue and originally built for Australian rules football. I could have had a cycling track around it's perimeter, because it was originally a multi-sport venue, but no references to a track that I could find.
(I'm watching the basketball game and thought I'd research the topic while sitting here)
