Has anybody ever started a neighbourhood group ride ?

As I've mentioned before in other threads, I've been considering starting a local neighbourhood group ride on a regular basis.

I live in a neighbourhood that is on the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail
http://www.waterfronttrail.org/ and I've been amazed at the number of long time residents who have zero knowledge about it or who have never even walked on it.

Most aren't even aware of the Great Waterfront Trail adventure which literally passes by their doorsteps every year. The Great Waterfront Trail Adventure will not be held after next year
http://www.waterfronttrail.org/gwta_web/index.htm because the organizers have felt that it was time for private and local concerns to take the initiative and take over this sort of thing so I feel that it's time to take the bull by the horns and get something started.

I'd like to know if anybody has had any experience in this sort of thing and would like to share their experiences with it.
