A day on the bike beats a day in the office - anytime!

Things in south fla are a little different than the rest of the country. Our prime weather season is fast approaching an end, and the HOT and sticky weather will soon be here. That being the case, I put out a notice of a special day trip ride for Wed. 4/20. As the date grew near, the extended forecast looked very promising. Despite several emails to the club at large, only 3 others were about to work it into their schedules.

Andrew, Jeff, Jerry, and I made a trek to Jensen Beach to follow the route of the Treasure Coast Cycling Association's signature ride along the intercoastal and the ocean. We arrived at the park at about 7:15 and were on the road by 7:30. The weather was beautiful, but the winds were a little stronger than expected. It was to our benefit as we headed north along Rt 707, NW Indian River Road. The traffic was heavier than I experience 3 weeks ago, but then this was "rush hour" Jensen Beach style. Between that and the SW wind, I soon realized we would have been better served to drive all the way to Ft. Pierce and start the trip into the wind. Mental note for next time.

We were soon going 22 - 24 and made it to Ft. Pierce in no time. We crossed the bridge, and stopped at a park on A1A soon after. When we hit the road again we were heading into the wind, and it seemed to be ever increasing. We probably did 17 - 19. "Up hill" all the way. Despite that, we decided to continue south past 734 and did the twin b1+che$ (bridges) not once but twice! Then we headed north and did the bridge on 734 back to Jensen Beach. Gluttons for punishment, we then headed north to Skyline Drive and road the hills of Jensen beach.

Finally we headed back to Indian River Park, the start. Jeff and I had towels and a change of clothes and Jeff saw kids in a water park. Him and I ran down and ran through the water jets like kids. Felt great! We then changed our clothes and we all went off to find a place to eat. Sharp eyed Jeff spoted Crawfish Joe's N'aw leans diner. Locals confirmed it was a good choice, and indeed it was. We had a great lunch, rehydrated, and headed home. It was a great ride.

Sounds great Can I give you my bosses number and explain that to him?
I wish I had more flex time. If I come in early to ride early afternoon, --being salary, I get roped into staying late as well.
Still glad to be working- Just a little less and more biking would be better.

That phrase seems to come up on vacation when the weather is bad and one is cycling or skiing. Then we remind each other that a day on the bike beats a day at the office - anytime.

That sounds like a fun day off. I'm looking forward to a weekday of biking tomorrow. My company is one of only a few local employers taking Good Friday off. One of my coworkers and I are taking our MTBs an hour's drive to Flovilla, GA to ride the excellent singletrack at Dauset Trails. I have a feeling that after a few hours of fun, we'll be ready to indulge in the fine comfort food offerings of the nearby Fresh Air Barbecue.

I normally ride alone on training rides. There are few things these days that equals the freedom you have to ride anywhere at any speed you want. Any day on a bike is one of the finest things we can enjoy!!!
