If you’ve read the “Ann Arbor, 3rd annual 50+ summer ride” thread you know I won’t be able to participate in this event. Unfortunately it looks like my bike riding will take a back seat to health problems this summer.

During a routine checkup last month my doctor discovered a lump in my breast. The first few days after this discovery were a blur of activity – mammogram, ultra sound and a referral to the best breast cancer doctor in our area. I live within three miles of an excellent cancer treatment center that specializes in breast cancer.

My breast cancer doctor performed a biopsy and confirmed the tumor was malignant. All this happened right before my scheduled bike ride in Alabama. After talking with the doctor we decided it would be fine to go ahead with the bike trip. I really needed and appreciated the week off from all the depressing news.

Upon my return to the real world the doctor did further test to determine the course of treatments. I will be having a lumpectomy followed by radiation treatments. The type of radiation will be determined from information gathered during the lumpectomy. I’m hoping to meet the criteria for MammoSite 5-day targeted radiation therapy. If I don’t qualify for this procedure, I’ll be doing the 5-7 week radiation treatment program.

Since I have several relatives with breast cancer I qualified for some genetic testing to determine if my family has a gene for breast/ovarian cancer. Thankfully those test results were negative.

The cancer has been discovered early and I have the best breast cancer treatment team. I’m anxious to get this problem behind me and back on the bike. My family doctor and cancer doctor both agree that catching it early and my overall excellent health will be a big help in my recovery.

I was scheduled to ride GOBA and I intend to do a couple days of the tour. The lumpectomy has been scheduled and I’ll need to leave the ride early to keep that date.

May good karma and great medical care be with you. I am sure that all your riding is now and in the future is/will pay big dividends. Did the prostate cancer thing a year ago and doc called me 'robust' due to my riding. Don't let them kid you, full recovery takes a year....but it is worth it.

Bev, I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer about eight years ago. She had the same treatment you will be undergoing-- lumpectomy followed by radiation treatments. She is currently 76 years old, happy, healthy and has been cancer free since then! Hang in there, baby!

I have enjoyed your posts on this group.

Intellectually, I know that cancer is a possibility. But so far I have been free of that one. It must be quite stressful face that sort of thing and all the problems that go with it. You must feel blindsided.

My wife of 42 years (next month) was declared a survivor of breast cancer 4 months ago after chemo + surgery + radiation. She is doing well.

I'm glad that you discovered this early on, that you have a good team in place, and that you have the physical conditioning of a cyclist.

Hope you're able to do the 5-day Radiation therapy regimen - getting it over faster would be a good thing.
Enjoy your riding now and then again when you are able to.

Nora and I are praying for you. We are confident, that given the excellent care that surrounds you, you will come through with flying colors. My sister is a survivor of two separate cancers, including breast cancer, and she just had a checkup at 74 and is doing GREAT!! (Heck, she is too ornery to let CA get her, IMHO).
