+1 to what wolf said. A great plan is no plan at all. Follow your intuition. Good luck.

Sorry if the term old is somehow offensive. I use my dad's definition of old and young. They are both moving targets: old is more than ten years older than oneself and young is more than ten years younger than oneself. The world keeps getting younger.

Of course, by this definition, my thirty-five-year-old Trek is young, but my wife's 60-year-old Hercules is neither old nor young, at least for us.

I retired from the Air Force several years ago. Not a lot of money, but I think I can get by.

Thanks. I think. Believe it or not I am retired Air Force. I recently quit my job as a police academy director and want to travel. Use to travel a lot more and the bug has rebit me (new word I just made up).

How does that saying go? At the end of your life you will regret most the things you didn’t do.
If you don’t have any other responsibilities than cute little Toby, go for it.

Looking at the pix of your set up - you have space for one more water bottle (riding in the heat, you, and Toby, will be wanting a lot of water); and, maybe a compression sack for your sleeping bag to reduce the volume behind your seat.

Have fun!

Going north to escape high temperatures does not always work out, the high temps in Minnesota and Montana are hovering around 100 degrees. You'll need to research your route along with weather forecasts to find the sweet spots in summer months. Otherwise, if you just want to wander have fun and enjoy the ride, I hope all goes well for you.

I did that once... in 1986. I had a blast. I took a year off and just rode (started in LA and rode as far east as GA and then up North to the Dakotas, Wyoming into Idaho, Oregon and back down to CA). It had pluses and minuses. The biggest problem with no plans is sometime when you are ready to stop, there is just no place good to do that. I had to stop and camp in some horrible, scary places. Do that two or three times and you start planning your moves. BTW don't assume north will be cooler in the summer... I did a trip through Montana several years ago in July and the lowest temp was 101 - it got over 105 5 days in a role! The South can also be very cold in the winter as you should know. And the North east can be brutally humid and hot.

I suggest heading out west instead or flying out west and head back east. But just do it. You won't regret it.

That photo is a couple of months old. Since then I have added a front rack, two front panniers, a compression sack for tent and sleeping bag, and a second bottle cage. also have a handlebar bag on order. Maybe I should put another pic up there.

The way things are looking now I will be starting in September. I will probably start easing south and then turn west depending on the weather.
