I'm riding RAGBRAI next week

On Saturday I will officially earn the right to participate in this forum. And to celebrate my semi-century I will prove to myself that I am not yet old. I will be riding across Iowa in RAGBRAI next week for the very first time. I've got my 50+ jersey all packed, and plan to wear it on the last day for the picture of me dipping a tire in the Mississippi.

If you want to follow along, I plan to post daily updates on my blog (see my signature) and I created a site that will track my progress in real time: http://www.followbill.org

If you aren't familiar with RAGBRAI, it is a week-long ride across Iowa that covers about 450 miles. There are usually 10,000 participants!

I hope to see a few more 50+ jerseys out there next week.

Happy birthday week. Enjoy the ride, get as much sleep as possible, enjoy some great people and ignore the stories you will hear about nonagenarian farmers riding across the state on their Schwinns. Not all of them are true. Just some.

450 miles in 7 days straight? WOW,, That's a ride for sure. I thought I was sitting the bar high (For myself) in trying to be ready to do the "bike for MS" Express Scripts Gateway ride, Sept 10-11. I was shooting for the two 40 mile rides.
Congrats and I'll keep up with you I hope on the ride.

While you're in Glenwood, it should be easy to dip your wheel in the Missouri. It is all over the place in the area right now.

Awesome. Hope I see you out there. They say that if you make it through the first two days the rest are easy.

This will be my fourth Ragbrai in a row. The hills in southwestern Iowa will get your attention. Not in height nor length of climb, but they will be one after the other with few really flat sections.Take your time and enjoy the pass through towns.Ride safe and be prepared for more bikes than you have ever seen. There will be folks with considerble skill and ability to those you will think should not even be here as they have no clue how to ride safely in groups.

Y'all have fun and stay out of trouble. I hope I can do RAGBRAI sometime soon, maybe next year.

The total elevation gain for the 2011 Ride the Rockies bike route is 21,604 feet. The RAGBRAI route in "flat" Iowa climbs 21,206 feet.

I was on the first RAGBRAI in 1973 and 8 of the next 10. I haven't ridden it since, but was sorely tempted this year. It spends the night in Grinnell where I lived for 10 years from the late 1960's until the late 1970's. The OP described the ride as having 10,000 participants, but I think that's only the officially registered number. On any given day, that number can double. It's really a fun, social experience. On the first ride in 1973, there were 350 of us, and the ride was 6 days, not 7 . . .it was tough, but exciting.

Have a great time. It's a unique experience.

I rode the first one (1973) as well. Did the whole thing, other than the last mile when I blew a sew-up and didn't have a spare. Still have my patch around somewhere from it. I think there were 114 or 116 that did the whole thing the first year. Haven't ridden another one, and not sure I want to with that many people on it. I thought 350 or more was too many. Maybe I will though.

Hope those who are going have a great time!

I haven't done RAGBRAI, but have ridden across S. Iowa in a 4 day ride a couple years back. You'll love the rollers and especially the people. Hope it's not too hot or windy. Have fun and mingle with the local folk.
