Personal Best!

I had some in-car instruction cancellations this morning so I had a 4 hour window to go for a ride. Went 40 miles in 3hrs and 6 minutes. 5 miles further than my previous best.
Celebrated with a nice piece of fudge cake
Couldn't find any pie...

It's the cake.

Seriously, though, congrats. You're well on your way to a completely unsupported solo half-century.

Congrats! 40 miles! I still haven't broke the 15 mile mark.

Way to go!

Congratulations, teachme. A forty-mile ride sounds pretty impressive to me (I am currently riding in the low 20's, thought I did do 70+ miles as a teenager). Though I am not an expert in this area, I feel a nice slice of fudge cake is an acceptable substitute for pie.

Most of the threads I start go off page ten with no replies.

I'm not starting any more..

Congrats on the forty and shame on you for the cake!

My first rides when I got my bike last year were to the EZmart
to get an ice cream sandwich.

Sure proud for you. Most I have ridden so far at one time was just under 30 miles in two hours. I have only been biking serious for approximately two months and hope to do as well as you have done shortly. Again, congrats.

Congrats! I hope to do a MS ride in September, two days, 40 mile legs each day. But I have not even done 20 straight yet! (Buying shorts and shoes tomorrow....) Did 18.7 in Dockers. Paid for it the rest of the week!

Forget the fudge cake .... go get yourself some pie. You deserve it. Congrats on your personal best. I have been planning a 40 mile ride each week for the past month but the heat and humidity down here has forced me to cut the ride short each week. This weekend will probably be no different. Again, congratulations on your ride.

Woo hoo! Congratulations on the PR!

I have found that cake, pie, or Haagen Dazs make good celebratory splurges.

Ribeye or sirloin? I feel way less guilty about eating good after a good ride on the bike!

Great progress! Just think what you'll be able to do if you continue at that rate.

Of course, in a week you'll be 2875 miles from home, which could be a problem.

Nicely done! Keep riding, a bit here, a bit there, and pretty soon you'll be doing that 50 and then some. There is hope!

Offered as an example (and only partly so I can get some bragging rights ):
I'm 62. Today I did 57.7 miles.
The bike: '73 Raleigh Gran Sport, upgraded but still friction DT shifters w/6-speed freewheel.
Miles + rider age + bike age = 157.7.

(Of course, our heat wave broke today and the humidity started to fall.)

I'm no athlete, just a guy who's tried to stay healthy, a guy who enjoys being able to do the things he enjoys doing. If I can do it, you can too. So can all of you.

A common "feature" I see here in 50+ is people just starting out biking after 10 or more years not biking. It's great whenever anyone starts biking again. And of course you have to start by doing what is within your reach. But the goal should be to hang in there longer! Become a demon on the pedals!

Go, teachme! Go, all of you! Reach for 50. Then 60...
