Birthday ride
WOW it's been a long time since I've been on here, but I have a question I need help with. Or maybe it's just a pole.
My girlfriend just started riding a month ago & we were talking about me having to ride my birthday ride next month, 51 miles.
It got her thinking because her birthday is Dec. 31st & she asked me; what happens if I can't ride because of cold or snow on my birthday?
So the question for people here is; when do you ride your birthday miles when your birthday is in the winter??
She was wondering since we are the same age if she could ride with me on mine next month? I liked that idea because it will be her longest ride, and it will be riding with someone I enjoy riding with.....

Somewhere in the fine print or in a footnote of the official rules, there must be a dispensation for riding one's birthday ride early when one's birthday occurs when the weather is normally uncivilized (i.e. cold, snowy, windy etc.); furthermore, riding said birthday ride with one's significant other when the age of the significant other is the same as that of the other significant other should be worth extra credit (i.e. another piece of pie!).
Go for it during civilized weather. It may turn out to be the first double birthday ride in BF 50+ history!

I think its great she wants to ride with you and even if it wasn't in doctor J's rule book I would vote for an exception due to special circustances.
My birthday is in mid Feb. and I just tough it out and ride it here in central Fl. Sometimes I even have to wear a long sleeved shirt.

Perry!
I'm delighted to hear from you! "Girlfriend" sounds like you've made progress since we last heard from you. And a cyclist too! That's a positive change.
On topic:
A few years back there was a suggestion that winter babies take their birthday ride on their half-birthday. Since your GF is just starting and her half-birthday has passed, I'd vote for letting it count.

My birthday is in January and the weather in Ohio generally isn't nice enough for a ride with 60+++++ miles. I always plan my birthday ride in the summer months. This may not be an official rule but it's mine

The good thing about a birthday ride is since it's your birthday, you get to make all the rules.

Fortunately my birthday comes in early October which is normally some of the best riding weather of the year. I don't always do the ride right on my birthday due to schedule conflicts.

Here in FL, I don't have a problem. But I generally do my "birthday" ride a week or so early at the Horrible Hundred, a local event that goes off every year.
I like the plan of doing the birthday ride at the "half birthday". Another valid one would be to do a couple's birthday ride in which if they both do the ride on one of their birthday's, it counts for both. Birthday rides are made for the cyclists, not cyclists for the ride. So there is some fiddle room.

I have a December birthday too, and always plan for a ride on that day. However, this is Oregon and it does rain in December, so flexibility is necessary. I try to do the ride as close to the day as possible, and it usually happens plus or minus a week from the birthday. There have been years when it was changed to a birthday cross country ski, and that was a fun substitute. We have an annual New Years day community ride, maybe there is something like that near you, that would be a fun combination of celebration.

She wanted you to answer, "No problem. Your birthday present this year can be a vacation in the warm location of your choice." <G>

So we have decided she is going to ride with me on mine, then if the weather is good on hers I'll ride with her. Can't hurt to get in a extra long ride.
