The Ladies are Reigning - even the 50+'rs

I went for a couple of miles walk today, and, once again, noticed the great increases in ladies bicycling, walking, jogging on our area MUPS. All ages, a variety of bicycles from comfort to hybrids to road bikes with aerobars.

Today, I saw one other male and about 15 females, which parallels and reinforces previous experiences.

And, we have some top-notch women riders, and I am used to being passed by them.

Bravo for the ladies, and, men - get out there!!

Do you notice the same thing in your area?

I think it's more gentlemen in this area but the ladies are well represented on wheels. More women run, jog or walk then men.

I've been noticing ladies most all of my adult life. Nothing has changed.

Ah, did you say something about bicycles?

In my area is is more or less like the national average, 20 percent women to 80 percent men cyclists. Running/jogging or walking seems I see more women maybe 6 out of ten.

I ran this morning, and probably saw 70% women and 30% men walking/running. I was on a local MUP, and saw just about the opposite ratio riding.

You may be riding on the girls trail.

Have noticed more ladies showing up at club rides lately. That's a good thing. For one thing, it means there will be more guys showing up soon.

I ride for transportation rather than recreation, so most of the cyclists I encounter are others who use their bikes to get around. On the streets in my area (basically a working-class suburb), the vast majority, over 90%, are men. If I take my bike on the commuter train or go into the city, I see an increased number of women, I'd guess around 20-25%. Nearly all of them are young.

This is actually rather weird, I think, because cycling for transportation is very popular in this region and has been for years. I can't go more than a few blocks without seeing another rider. Each commuter train has capacity for either 48 or 80 bikes and it's often close to overflowing.

Fit, fun loving women wearing stratch lycra. I can't understand why more men don't like bicycling.

I pass a number of cyclists when I ride, and the number seems to be growing all the time, yet I rarely see another woman on the road. I don't understand why.

I believe I see more females out exercising in their attractive outfits than males. Of course, I am genetically predisposed to notice females so that I'm a biased observer. Regardless of personal bias, there are many more females, of all ages participating in sports and exercise; many more than when I was a young man. As a high school boy, the only physical activities available to girls was field hockey and cheer leading. Now I see girls and women riding or running long distances or engaging in every sport that has been invented. Just a few weeks ago I watched part of a girls fast pitch softball practice. The girls can hit, throw and steal bases and dive headfirst into home plate. I enjoy seeing girls like this but I also like seeing the punky looking older women; the grandmothers in elbow and knee pads roller bladeing. For all I know, these older gals may be sporting a tattoo somewhere. We live in interesting time and I love it. I'm so lucky.

Women who wear finger nail polish that matches their bike.
Although I don't get to confirm this very often because they zip past me very quickly.

There may be more women out cycling or joining cyling groups if they could trust that they were appreciated and respected for their cycling abilities rather than the way they look in their cycling shorts.

Appreciation of the female body is no crime. That said, ogling is very creepy. They get bonus points if they can keep pace on a ride.

I would say the men to women ratio here is 10:1. No biggy. I am out there to ride.

I know a lot of the ladies who are dedicated riders in this area. On group rides, if everyone shows up, we represent about 1/5 of the total number of riders. However, I have noticed MANY ladies riding "recreationally", and that number seems high to me. Last week, when I went on a group ride with the fellas in an area that is frequented by many clubs and individual riders from the San Francisco Bay Area, I saw a large number of serious lady riders. Still, the ratio seemed low, probably 1/10 of the total. I know I represented one out of seven in my group!

Okay, so you can say you saw a lady rider today, here you are:

I pondered for a long time about whether to reply to this. Miss K, I have never met you but I have read your posts in BF and I certainly respect you for them. So I hope it won't offend you if I re-phrase your comment, for I suggest it should not be an either/or question and so might be stated thus:
There may be more women out cycling or joining cyling groups if they could trust that they were appreciated and respected for their cycling abilities in addition to the way they look in their cycling shorts.
(No, I will not use the acronym FIFY, which I dislike.)

Miss K, I'm at the age where I could care less how I look in shorts. If anyone wants to ogle, ogle. However, I do agree with you. There is a fear factor. I've had other gals say things to me along those lines ("aren't you worried about how much those clothes reveal, I'd never wear them"). However, some have said, too, that they're timid about riding with a group (read that: people they don't know) because they don't believe they're "good enough". That's a fairly common thread with a lot women I know. That said, I ride with some pretty amazing female cyclists. I am the slow one, but I ride fairly well. The men in our group do appreciate us for/and our abilities, and many of them have said so on more than one occasion. I appreciate them for that, and for looking out for us when needed - and there have been times.

I do wish I could get more gals out there on their bikes....

Lets see, on our club ride today there were at least 7 women, 5 of whom were over 50 (the other 2 were around 40). There were about 14 men. I can assure you the women are appreciated for their ability to ride a bike. They are fully a part of the pacelines.

I did an early morning 20 miler, and, once again, the ladies won. Many more joggers and walkers, and just about even on the bicycling.
