Combining cycling and photography

So I'm a cyclist and a photographer. And I always have my trusty iPhone with me on a ride. Typically I am running MapMyRide on my iPhone whilst turning my cranks. When I stop along the way said iPhone will frequently come out for the obligatory shot of Lucy, my ride:

I named her Lucy because she's a redhead and a mad one because she's also a Trek Madone 5.2. So she's Lucy my Mad Redhead!

Any hoo last night I installed Snapseed on my iPad. It's image editing software for iOS devices. I got to fiddling with it and out came the above image. Kinda trippy eh?

Here is a more generic image of Lucy:

Always remember the best camera is the one you have with you! A rather poignant quote from a fellow fotog named Chase Jarvis who also is a cyclist.

As an ameture photographer, my main camera is a very expensive Panasonic digital that I won't take on the road with me as it is too bulky and gets in the way. I purchased a cheap Polaroid camera at Target fro $40.00 and it does a very nice job of taking 3 mp photos. I have already posted several of the shots that I have taken with it. I don't have an iPhone and the camera on my cell phone sucks, so the cheap-o goes with me when I ride and fits nicely in my jersey pocket.

I'm no photographer, but I snap a lot of pictures with my Fuji F10 digital p&s camera. I'd like to replace it with something even more compact, but it keeps working despite years of abuse, so I'll keep using it.

I bought a P&S camera to carry, my main stuff is far to bulky and expensive.

BTW, quote from OP: "Always remember the best camera is the one you have with you! A rather poignant quote from a fellow fotog named Chase Jarvis who also is a cyclist." That's an adaptation from another field though very appropriate. I think the original has to do with pistols or rifles in a self defense situation. Very appropriate there too!

Beautiful shot and manipulation. That's easily as good as or better than anything I've seen gracing the cover of a bike company brochure.

I've actually stopped carrying a camera with me on most rides. I find that my rides suffers if I'm thinking about composition, and I find my photography suffers if I don't put enough time into each shot. For me, photography works better when I'm on foot with lots of time to think about what I want to shoot and how I want to shoot it. My cycling suffers if I spend too much time on foot.

Pretty much my thoughts as well although, I am not much of a photographer and can count on one hand the number of times I have carried a camera. I still manage to get the odd decent shot though. I never include bikes in the pictures. I just don't find them that interesting.

I more often than not carry my old Canon A80 P&S in a belt pouch. It's a bit bulky and a mere 4 Mp, but it still works after seven years. I have also been known to carry a 1950s vintage film camera in a belt pouch, usually my Voigtländer Perkeo II with some 120 B&W film. I agree that it is way easier to get good shots on foot, but the tradeoff is covering less ground.

I've slowly built up a collection of shots along a number of nearby trails.

I also own some far more serious gear, but am reluctant to drag it around on the bike.

I'm looking forward to following this thread.

I'm also and amateur photographer (used to do weddings etc., and used to be competitive in national and international salons...) and like taking a few pics along the road.

The problem - my smallest camera is still bulky, and I can only carry it when I'm using my Camelbak - which I don't do very often. I guess I could do some cell-phone pics and clean them up to the limited extent I can in Photoshop...

My pro stuff is way to bulky and heavy. I got an Olympus Stylus Tough that fits in a pocket or seat pack, is water/shock resistant and makes 14mp images. Not as good as my Nikon but remarkably good for a pocket camera.

I don't even pretend to be a photographer. I only take pics to document our rides and the people we ride with.

I use a Canon point and shoot but like more the images my Sony produced. Too bad it broke.

My Canon is way too heavy to carry along on rides. I do carry my underwater P&S with me as it 6 mp and takes nice ands shots. I only carry that one when I'm riding somewhere I haven't been before or special rides. Never can tell what you are going to see and the few ounces it weighs don't bother me at all. Plus since it's water proof it's pretty much dust proof as well.

Both the camera and the bicycle are devices that teach you to pay attention. Combining them is always difficult.

maybe the thread should be "cycling versus photography"

I am not a photograher, and do not claim to take pictures as good as Mr. Beanz, but I too am someone who rides and occasionally takes pictures. The problem I find too often is I dont want to stop to take pics. Sometimes it is a group ride, and that is problematic.

For me, one activity always tends to replace the other, as it were. If I'm going to take photos, then I want to carry my tripod, camera/bag, etc., etc. I'll want to find a prime location, wait for the Right Light and such. Obviously that's gonna interfere with riding or whatever else I had in mind at the time. I've encountered the same situation when out on an (amateur astronomy) observing session in a nice rural place: Just about the time I need to be getting setup for the night is also the best time for photography.

I'm usually best off if I just decide which one it will be on concentrate on that.

I don't usually carry a camera with me, I do have
my cellphone on me at all times(Tmobile/Huawei Comet).
I just wish it had a better camera(3.2 MP)

If I'm planning to take photos on a ride, I'll bring my Nikon COOLPIX P100

That is the nice thing about rides like GMR (climb). I can ride to the top, get in the full ride, then stop along the way on the descent for the pic and some action vid clips. Makes for a little extra climbing too.

I seemed to have started something! Way cool!

I figured I wasn't the only one bringing a camera of some sort along on my rides! Thanks for the kind words about my image! I appreciate it!

I too am a full time working pro fotog www.ramblinlamb.com. I have plenty of gear I would never dream of bringing along on a ride which is why I like my iPhone for that purpose. I'm going to bring it anyway so why not leverage it? And I don't ask it to perform on the same level as my pro gear.

Fortunately, my cell phone (LG 1500) takes decent enough shots for web posting and the like. Then, I can use Irfanview (free at Irfanview.com), which has an automatic - and generally pretty good - "enhance photo" function. I love to take snapshot-type pictures, but am definitely not into "photography" as a hobby.

Not GREAT, but acceptable to me for web posting. Cell phone sample below

Or an opportunity! A shot with people in it is always better than a shot of a riderless bike

Not to be mean or anything but ....you're new!

There are tons of ride pictures posted in the forums in various forums. I myself have posted a ride picture thread (now videos) over 5 years. First year attracted 14,000 views and last year attracted 25,000 views. Not to mention "what camera do you carry" and related type threads that I know of since I started posting back in 2005.

Might not be new but hey, I like looking at the pictures!

The $40.00 camera I mentioned goes with me on all rides outside my MUP, but with Florida being so flat and mostly woods on the country roads, the best photos seem to be along the Gulf, the ocean or close to them. It's often hard to get some good photos on group and club rides.

John look at my image above. Instead of looking for the grand scene think much more intimate. Look for the smaller scene that has a much stronger mood.
