    I'm a little beat up...

    There was a break in the clouds yesterday and I managed to get in a 50 mile ride yesterday.Glorious day and the inclement weather has kept me from taking a sizable ride since before Irene.I've done this ride before and in worse hotter conditions and never felt so beat up.I tried to push myself a little cause I signed up for the NYC Century next Sun. but nothing too intense.I came home tired but a hot bath some food I didn't feel much worse than usual.However in the middle of the night I started getting muscle cramps in my thighs,hands,ribs,calfs.In the morning general ache and fatigue and some sweating.No more cramps now and I feel o.k. if a little weak.Never had such a response before.And I've done much more trying rides.Any similar experiences?thanks.

    Not sure if this applies to you but when I feel anything similar to what you described it is always related to dehydration and depletion of energy...as in food.

    May have been humidity catching you out but I reckon it is a sickie coming on- so you have have a genuine excuse for a day off after the ride--Think "Man Flu"

    Warm weather keeps the muscles loose. Cool weather makes them tighten up. Also, you may have not had enough to drink, thinking you didn't need it. Evaporation from sweating is much more efficient in cool weather. You may need MORE to drink.

    Aside from the sweating, it could be from dehydration/overexertion. But with sweating I wonder if you aren't coming down with something like a flu.
    The more you ride your bike, the less your ass will hurt.

    I took off work as I feel extremely weak especially when going up stairs(and faint)and there's alot of that in my job.I'll report back after a good nights sleep.

    I sometimes think that too many of us (myself included) tend to find reasons to do a self-diagnosis and come up with an answer that is more of an excuse for how we are feeling rather than the actual reason for why we feeling the way we do. Having been in the medical profession for 25 years (retired paramedic) I often tend to use my knowledge to diagnose myself. I should know better because too often, I'm way off the mark.

    Several years ago, my wife and I started a low-carb diet and I began loosing weight like crazy. I thought to myself, "this diet is really working great", but I failed to put the other issues that I was having together with the weight loss because I was focused on the weight loss. I was due for my annual physical and was really happy that I could tell my doc about the weight loss that he's been after me to lose. The physical went great and he was very happy with the weight loss until the blood tests came back. Diagnosis: Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). The CML was the reason for the quick weight loss and not the diet.

    To the OP and others, I'm sure that what you are feeling isn't anything near what happened to me, but the fact that you are equating your symptoms as the result of cycling after a short layoff, is the point that I was trying to make with my story. Everyone on this forum is over 50 and even if we are in great shape from cycling, our bodies are still 50+ years old. I think BF is the wrong place for people to ask for medical advise or for a comparison of their symptoms. If you aren't feeling any better after the first day, go see a doctor.

    Good idea!Sat. Morning I was too weak to walk the dogs and my stool was black.(internal bleeding.Just got home after a day and a half in intensive care and another on the regular ward.4 units of blood transfusion.Seems an old ulcer srarted bleeding profusely.Well the bleeding stopped and the blood count is stabilized and I'm home.Go figure...

    I felt like cr@p on the bike this weekend and I'm fairly sure it was due to fighting off the cold that both my wife and daughter have had this past week. It doesn't take much when getting sick to make one's effort seem much more labored.

    Good thing you went to see a doctor and got the care needed. An ulcer is nothing to fool around with as you know.
