I'd signed up to do the Goldendale Century, which was set to happen today. It would have been my last long ride of the season, as I'm back in the classroom and my riding days are shorter than they were over the summer.
Last week a forest fire started near Goldendale, with the main road south from where I live to the town being closed, off and on. Houses have been lost and hundreds of fire fighters have been pouring in to try and get the thing under control. Got word on Friday that the ride has been cancelled--road closures, lots of smoke, fire fighters taking up every spare room in town. A bummer. The ride would have been in high, dry steppe country with temps in the 90s, just the kind of riding I love.
Today as a bit of a consolation I went out and did 52 miles. It was 99 degrees out when I finished.
A pic of the fire is included.
